Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Franklin Pierce Homestead was the home of the fourteenth president of the United States from his infancy until his marriage in 1834. The Pierce Homestead is a spacious and beautiful, federal style country home. Built by Pierce's father in 1804, it reflects the gracious and affluent living of the nineteenth century. A ballroom, which extends the entire length of the second floor, was used for entertaining neighbors and distinguished families of the state and nation. Franklin Pierce shared Daniel Webster's dedication to national unity and led our country during the most trying of times, the time of slavery. Private tours & large group tours can be arranged. The Pierce Homestead is available, at a fee, for small private functions & meetings.

Hillsborough is a town that shows a lot of history and this homestead shows some of the revolutionary and early 19th century aspects. The reconstruction has been careful, so the wall stenciling was carefully researched to find the exact pigments, etc. The stories of Franklin Pierce and his father Benjamin are a great window onto revolutionary and pre-Civil War life. The guides are knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

While in the town, visit the other village centers, especially Hillsborough Center and drive past Gleason Falls over the special stone bridges. Stop at German Jacks for good German bread.

This is a first class display of history and very educational. Was a little disappointed that you could not photograph, even without flash while inside.

Its nice. Its pretty well taken care of. There are special events in the summer. Kind of what you'd expect...on a small scale. Understated....kind of like Pierce.

“This is a gem!”

We decided to visit the Franklin Pierce Homestead on a return trip to CT from the White Mountains. We were given a wonderful tour by Sara of this beautiful home. She was one of the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guides we've ever encountered. What was intended as a brief rest stop became one of the most informative and interesting activities of our New Hampshire vacation! It was definitely worth the $5:00 admission!
