A very extensive collection worth taking the time to visit. Especially liked the Native American Art exhibit.

Small, easily navigable, and free. Exhibits appeared well laid out w/explanations. If you like art, worth a visit.

This art museum has a small, but fine collection of European paintings.Artists with fine paintings include;Perugino and Workshop,Francesco Trevisiani("Beheading of John the Baptist"),Claude Lorrain,Jan Davidz de Heem,Nicolas Rene Jollain("Belisarius Begging For Alms"),Elizabeth Vigee-Lebrun,Alfred Sisley("Loing Canal at Loing"-my favorite painting)and Picasso. This museum also has a delightful, but small collection of American paintings, including paintings by;Joseph Blackburn,Thomas Doughty,Gignoux("New Hampshire"),Rockwell Kent("New England Landscape"),Maxfield Parrish,John Sloan("Rooftops of Chelsea,New York City"),and Georgia O'Keefe. This free art museum also has a fine series of Ancient Assyrian stone reliefs from Iraq. The building that houses this charming art museum is a work of art in its own right. So enjoy!

“Worth the trip if you appreciate fine art”
Reviewed November 19, 2008

I dropped my daughter at Dartmouth and decided to pop in to the Hood Museum for 20 minutes. It is in a contemporary building located through an arch and then a courtyard next to the Hanover Inn across from the Dartmouth Green. The space is modern and open and muted and exceptionally well lit and designed.

It's a fabulous small museum - perfectly sized to linger for an hour or so. The collection was broader than I had expected - beautiful European painting and drawings from as early as 16th and 17th century, drawings, ancient Greek and Cypriot ceramics, and 19th and 20th c. American painting.

I was impressed with the curatorial choices, and appreciated the concise descriptions next to the works. I'm from Chicago, and the Art Institute is my benchmark - the Hood felt warmer and the art was more accessible (inviting me to get within a few inches to examine brushwork) and each piece impressed with it's quality and state of preservation.

There are six panels from Ashurnasipal's palace in Babylon - restored and mounted for close-up viewing. I hope that the Oriental Institute can match their lovely presentation. There were almost two dozen European paintings from the 17th and 18th century set up to savor.

Skip a covered bridge or local dairy or glass-blower if you must to let the Hood guide you on a tour of the arts.
