Stayed one night here after spending three nights out in the AMC huts on the trails from Crawford Notch to Appalachia trailhead (near Gorham NH). I had stayed here several years before and loved the atmosphere. The night at Joe Dodge lodge included family style dinner and full buffet breakfast, plus there was an evening Forest Service rangers program on timber management. The lodge also has a sitting room with games, and good free wifi throughout. The atmosphere is very hiking-oriented and there is no place else you could stay where there is so much enthusiasm for outdoor activities. All staff were very cordial.

@2002 - through hiker of the Appalachian Trail commenced this visit from Springer Mountain in north Georgia ! My daughter flew east from Oregon to hike a week or more north with her father . She rented a car and drove to Pinkham from Boston arriving elevenish at night . Lonely road even in late August . Father waits by the sign at the road adjusting flood lights so his daughter wouldn ' t miss the lodge . Storied habitation . Central to all Yankee - dom . Especially for outdoor people . Entrance to Tuckerman ' s Ravine . Mecca of late season skiing and no longer run , Inferno Ski Race . European and American skiing met there in 1936 in the person of Tony Matt who shuses the headwall ( previously never achieved by anyone ) ; halves the winning time . Vegetarian meals as are all the ' huts ' meals . Range of comfortable modern accomodations including bunks . Gear , maps , good support for trails to huts leading away from this base . Breath in the fresh air and historocity - sit outside by the front door !

I stayed at Joe Dodge Lodge with my three kids. It was fabulous! A great experience. Having done some of the AMC huts that was what I expected, but not what I got. There was a library, a social room more for adults (very grownup ambiance, grand piano and huge fireplace) but downstairs was a "family area". The family area had an upright piano (one of my children plays whenever he get the chance), nature games and activities for all ages, a discovery center, it's own fireplacw with a glass screen so we didn't worry about the little ones getting too close, a TV and VCR with Magic School bus nature videos, and a Discovery Station area to learn in depth on all kinds of topics that might interest you while you are there (ie. animal tracks, rock types, constellations, etc) Dinner is servered family style at big heavy wooden tables in a common room but it very good and very filling. There are daily activities for different ages and evening presentations as well. It's a one-of-a-kind experience and if you have any nature lovers in your group, it's worth the trip. Bathrooms are by gender, not private, but have hot showers. We stayed in the family type bunk with one twin bunk and one that had a twin on top and a full on the bottom. It doesn't leave much room for anything but sleeping, but the beds are comfortable, the rooms have that rugged AMC ambiance but are very nice, lots of lights (all the beds had there own reading lights), etc.

I am planning to do this again this fall and look foreward to it. It's nothing like a hotel or motel, it's a nature adventure for those who want a real bed with clean sheets and blankets. Those who would love to spend the whole day hiking but also like a big family style meal prepared by someone else.
