“Natural Elegance”
Reviewed September 12, 2012 via mobile

A vacation should be all fun and pleasure. After arriving at the beautifully landscaped inn, we were received as old friends though it was to be our first stay. Coming from the seaside of Cape Cod, we love the beautiful mountains, rivers, brooks, lakes, and forests of New Hampshire. We get so excited about the grace and beauty. To be honest, it's hard to find lodging that measures up to the natural ambiance. Not this time. As I said, welcomed as old friends, Mike and son Brett took us on a tour, reviewed the many amenities available to us and took us to the "Josuah Bartlett Room" on the second floor. Mike helped me with the bags. The room was elegant. Brightly painted with lots of windows and a first rate bathroom with a jacuzzi for two. Staying four days and three nights, we felt entirely at home in the room. The bed and chairs were comfortable. We even watched the early fireworks from our room. Nice! Waking up at the Bernerhof offered one more elegance in homey environment. Good coffee and tasty pastry before breakfast ensured a leisurely start to what would become a fine morning. Arriving at breakfast and comfortably seated, Brett or Mike greeted you and brought you a delicious breakfast sundae, juice and coffee. After offering pleasant conversation and taking your order, it wasn't long before Mike or Brett delivered your delicious breakfast. When not busy, it was easy to engage the innkeepers in pleasant and interesting conversation. I'll never forget the fun we had discussing the monster spider in her web outsider the dining room window. Joyce and I are still chuckling over young Brett's reaction to the olive-sized arachnid. We could not have had a more pleasant or comfortable experience, one that even surpassed the natural splendid ambiance of the mountains. We will be sure to return in 2013.

My husband and I just returned from a three night stay at the Bernerhof Inn. We were pleasantly greeted by Brett, who welcomed us, spent some time getting to know us, and gave us a very nice tour of the Inn, which is beautiful. A few moments later, we met Mike who welcomed us, spent time getting to know us as well, and asked us if we needed anything.

Our room was also located on the first floor adjacent to the kitchen. Because of this proximity, a refrigerator and microwave are completely unnecessary as Mike was more than happy to allow guests access to the kitchen if they needed ( I don't know of many B&Bs that do have a refrigerator or microwave in the room ). We never heard any noise coming from the kitchen and slept peacefully at night.

Breakfast every morning was fantastic. Brett always served us with a smile and Mike makes everything from scratch. We had omelets, "southern" sausage gravy and grits, and home-made corned beef hash and eggs. Mike will also make anything for someone with dietary restrictions, as one of our fellow guests had a gluten allergy. And you must try the cookies put out at night- amazing!

We felt comfortable and relaxed the entire time. We enjoyed a few beers in the pub after dinner a few nights and met a few more people from the Bernerhof "family"- Carrie was "AWESOME" and the owners, Dick and Mary were very pleasant. Everyone offered information for places to eat, attractions to see and asked how our day was upon returning.

We left feeling appreciated, relaxed and happy to have made some amazing new friends. We look forward to returning again in the future.

Room Tip: first floor rooms are large and easy access.

We did quite a bit of searching for B&B stays for Labor Day weekend in the area. After just driving past many resorts we passed along the way, by looks alone, we were very glad that all of the other B&B offerings in the area were ones we decided not to go with!

Our welcome was very warm from Mike, who saw us as arrive an hour late (8pm). He was quite hospitable and gave us a pleasant tour of the inn.

The room runs in the vicinity of 300 sq. ft. Be that as it may, it is a highly requested room, by which is closest to the parking lot, on the first floor, with a nice patio outside and a featured hot tub inside the room itself! Also in the room were a powered fireplace, king size bed, and wall-mounted flat screen TV.

Some drawbacks to our experience, however, included the following:

- We were CONSTANTLY swatting flies that seemed to come from nowhere. It seemed I was on insect control every time we returned to the room! We must have swatted ten flies while here.

- Noise was a factor. From the bathroom, we could hear everything going on in the kitchen just next to the room, and everyone walking above us in their room.

- No microwave or refrigerator were present in our room. For the price, you'd think at least a coffeemaker would be a nice amenity as well, but that was located near the library-like dining area.

- Dust was spotted on bed poles, and inside the table lamps.

- Morning breakfast was started with a "breakfast sundae" placed in front of us. We weren't asked for other starter options like juice, coffee, or other beverages. It almost seemed the kitchen needed to pass off a breakfast sundae so it might not go to waste by being thrown out. That having been said, the hash and eggs were good and in nice portion as well.

All in all, with a comfortable bed, great ambiance, and a convenient location next to the parking lot, we were somewhat satisfied with what we did have. The constant need to kill off pesky flies and the inconvenience of having no microwave or mini-fridge in the room provided the biggest downfall to our experience.

Our next trip to the north country will include a visit to a newer hotel or inn in the area, with a comparison to this experience, to determine whether we will indeed return to Bernerhof after the next trip.

Room Tip: Check for amenities. Just because a place to stay has a hot tub. doesn't automatically indicate...

Thank you Heather for taking the time to write a review after your Labor Day stay here at the Bernerhof. Please know that I take each and every review seriously and make every effort to correct any faults brought to my attention from guests, whether it is during their stay or in a review such as this. Being a Bed & Breakfast Inn, breakfast is very important to our guests and offering at least three fresh choices each morning takes time to prepare, so my day does start early. I try to be as quiet as possible as to not disturb guests on the first floor, but many guests request an early breakfast to start their day. I do apologize if our server forgot to offer you juice or ice water with your fresh fruit breakfast sundae, but as you stated coffee and a selection of teas are always available in the breakfast room for our guests. I have also addressed your comments as to the cleanliness of the room, as it is of the utmost importance here at the Bernerhof. Additionally, my kitchen is always open to guests for use of our refrigerator or walk-in, freezer or microwave, as there are none in any of our guest rooms.
I certainly hope you choose to stay with us again during one of your future trips to the North Country, and thank you once again for your comments! Mike

Both Mike & Brett made us feel right at home. The room was beautiful and comfortable, in fact the whole house and grounds are very well maintained. The food was excellent. I would go back in a heart beat!!!

We spent a wonderful weekend at the Bernerhof Inn B&B at the end of August. The inn is surrounded by a beautiful and well kept garden; the flowers are spectacular and magnets for butterflies. The room we stayed in on the first floor was spacious, with a separate sitting area including a whirlpool tub. After a long day hiking the northern Presidentials, that whirlpool was worth its weight in gold. Mike the innkeeper is helpful and personable. He packed us a breakfast sunday (fruit, yogurt, and granola) on one morning we needed to leave before breakfast was served. The next day we enjoyed the full breakfast, including a perfect cup of coffee, eggs, pancakes, fruit and and coffee cake. I would encourage everyone to stay here!!

I cannot tell you how happy it makes us to see such wonderful reviews. Equal to what you write about our service and the quality of the Inn, we so appreciate the fact that you took the time to notice the "small" details that you point out, and better yet, the fact that you have enjoyed your visit to the Mt. Washington Valley and all that we have to offer. On your next trip, I am sure that I will have some new recipes to try out on you!!!
