“Mass week at Gunstock in new Hampshire”

Skiied Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of this week. Weather was sunny and warm which always makes for more pleasant skiing. Considering the amount of snow or lack of snow this winter we were impressed with the great conditions. We have been coming to Gunstock for 6 years with our family and love it. Small mountain and most trails are perfect for beginner and intermediate. If you are looking for black diamond you may want to go elsewhere. The reason I am writing this review is to complement the entire gunstock staff. Everyone is friendly and helpful from the ticket booth to the rental personnel to the parking lot attendants. Very family friendly. We will see you next year!

Ski school and daycare were great-no time for parents to brood and worry your kids will be ok. A
Personalized staff member came out to get each one of our kids and whisked them away so we could head out and ski. All smiles and good memories upon pick up! Area lacks restaurants only downside.

Excellent skiing - trails were well groomed and had excellent coverage despite the fact that New England has had very little snowfall this season, the trails had ample coverage. The lifts are fast and we experienced very short wait times to get on the lifts.

A couple of minor irks: The seats in the cafeteria are extremely low and there is limited bag storage (the room we were in was a 'bag-free zone' - there are no storage spaces, there are some upstairs and they do offer free bag-check on the lower level, but that's kind of a pain so we didn't use it. Another irk was the water pressure in the bathrooms was set to low and the water was cold. I don't want to sound like a paranoid germaphobe, but it's a little weird to see a sign in a bathroom that says "Employees must wash hands before returning to work" and realize that the food service employees are washing their hands in cold water and only have a tepidly warm hand dryer and no paper towels to dry hands or use to open the bathroom door and exit.

I realize that business are doing what they can to reduce energy needs, but if you think about it, one snow cannon uses more energy in a day than a hand dryer would use in a year, so let's keep things in perspective OK and put more hot water in the bathrooms, make the hand dryers blow hot air, and put paper towels in the bathrooms.

Gunstock is one of the closest medium sized ski areas to Boston (100 miles, 2 hour drive most on interstate I-93) with a vertical drop of 1400' vertical drop and a high speed quad that whisks you to the summit. The 3rd longest chairlift in NH. Gunstock has terrain for all abilities and night skiing/riding for all abilities. It is a great mountain for grade school age children. There are wonderful twisting cruisers and undulating groomed advanced terrain. The vertical drop on the steep terrain is 900' or less, and the glades and steep natural cover bump runs are rarely open.

Lake Winnipesaukee with its numerous islands snakes around Gunstock on three sides and provides spectacular views from all over the mountain and indifferent directions. And on a clear day the snowcapped White Mountains beyond the lake only makes the view more spectacular. Gunstock has one of the five best ski area views in the East.

In the spring, as you ride the Panorama Quad, look into the trees as the lift steeply ascends a rocky area halfway up. I have frequently seen a porcupine chewing on new tree growth.

Gunstock has spruce trees at the summit, then lovely mature white pines and hemlock trees as you descend - adding to the view and special experience of skiing/riding Gunstock.

Gunstock has 2 terrain parks for different abilities with their own lifts, There are some flat areas which make challenge boarders and all at the base which is flat and spread out.

The old Lodge has real charm and wonderful large fireplaces. The food is standard fare, except for the daily specials which are always very good, and very hardy (maybe too so). Bag check is free, and other amenities include a reading room, changing rooms, a sport bar, and pub and grille.

Gunstock has snow tubing and a Zip Line Canopy Tour (longest in the US)

We came out to do a short bit of snowshoeing (with our own equipment). They have a pleasant small area to rent snowshoes and pay for trails fee, with seats, a fireplace, and snacks available (but only portapotties for restroom facilities. We only want to go out for about an hour, but our only option was a full day $17 a person trail pass. That seems extreme for snowshoeing. The man running the shop was very friendly and showed us what trails would work within our timeframe. The trail itself was not too thrilling - along a wide campground road, mostly. If we had had more time, I expect there would have been better pickings. Conditions were not great, but that was due to an icing up; not within their control. All in all, okay, but I would probably not make a return trip.
