“Great stay by the musical river”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

I've stayed here twice this month because I liked it so much. It got really cold both times but the rooms stayed warm and cozy. The beds are comfortable, the linens were nice--the quilt was a real quilt. The shower was good. The fridge and microwave worked well and everything was really clean. I have bad allergies--no problems at all at this hotel.

The riverside rooms are bigger but the rooms in hill building were nice too. I stayed on the second floor both times. The swing by the river is divine at night.

Room Tip: Depends on if you are going to grill. River rooms are close to the outdoor grill and the river sound...

We found this lodge via trip advisor and decided to stay one night. It was fall so the courtyard pool and volleyball was not part of our trip. In the summer it seemed like the court yard would be a nice place to hang out. The room was clean although older with a very small bath area. It worked fine for us. The river was a nice touch to connect to nature.

This motel was extremely clean, warm & basic. Has no hairdrier which was annoying as every hotel these days has one so we do tend not to pack one. We stayed on the ground floor & must have had a family with young children above us who were running riot at 4am! We could hear every footstep & toilet break. The motel is in a lovely setting with a great restaurant within walking distance.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor.

We found this lodge by using a coupon from the Hotel Coupons books you find at welcome centers as you enter each state. It was only our second time to use these coupons so we weren't sure what to expect. The lodge is set in the tiny village of Franconia along a little river/creek. River view rooms were generous sized, bed and bedding decent, everything very clean. It's older but nicely maintained and clean. Proprietor very friendly and helpful, breakfast mainly toast, bagels and yogurt. It was nice to put our money into a small, local business. Very close to Littleton which is also a cute place to explore.

Trip Advisor led me to Hillwinds, and I am so glad you did. This is one of the few affordable places in one of the most beautiful places in the USA. I did not expect an exceptionally comfortable bed, but that's what I got. Even with my arthritis, I slept pain-free. The room was clean, large, and with a great shower. The gentleman at the front desk told me where to get the best view of the stars, which were even more magnificent than the foliage. I will definitely come back.

I've driven thru Franconia for years and always saw this little lodge on the rivers edge but never stayed there. This was my first time with my boyfriend who has never stayed up in northern NH before and we were there for the perfect foliage weekend motorcycle ride. The couple that owns it is very friendly, helpful and it has a little old fashioned motel feel but I have to say its very clean and quiet even though they were full for the foliage weekend - you would never know they were sold out. I chose the river view on the upper floor and it was peaceful hearing the river all nite with your windows open vs traffic or air conditioning. We had the king bed which looked to be a perfect rectangle so i thought it was going to be hard but it wasnt ...it was comfortable...lots of pillows (we had 6 on the bed) thats hard to find....the shower was hot - albeit the bathroom is small ...but its a perfect spot for just relaxing, sitting outside on chairs looking off the balcony ...or the fire pit at the front of the building and the grounds are neat and homey. There is nothing modern per se but its fun by an older couple who care about the place obviously and are very generous with their time and bend over backwards to help. They offer, ice and soda machine in the main lodge...little refrigs/microwave in your room with a desk, 2 chairs to sit in, bed, tons of hangers, armoire with drawers and the tv and a sink outside the bathrm & a small bathroom. They have an outdoor pool, picnic tables, fire pit, barbecue grills on grounds in front of the bldg facing the river and just a nice quiet, atmosphere. They offer a continental breakfast in the morning....4 diff cold cereal, instant oatmeal, coffee (pretty good too), juice, milk, assorted bagels, english muffins, toast and muffins...nothing special but perfect to start your day. The owner did state to me that some folks think that they are a "dump" due to the prices they charge (even during peak foliage season") but he finds that they are surprised its cute and clean and it fulfills what you need.

Room Tip: Choose rooms in bldg facing the river - and of course top floor to avoid any noise above you and to...

We stayed at this property in September while attending the New Hampshire Highland Games
and Festival in Lincoln N.H. (20 min.drive). Great hospitality from owners. We had a nice river view room with a king bed covered by a beautiful duvet.Convenient fridge and microwave in the room. No hairdryers in room. Nice breakfast in room overlooking the river.
We would choose to stay here again.
