I recently enjoyed a late evening dinner at the bar with a friend. The kitchen closes at nine on Monday nights, but they were still willing to serve bar food slightly after 9. It was the best "barfood" I've ever experienced. They had a diverse selection of items, from lobster rolls, to gourmet burgers with fancy cheeses, etc. I had the fish and chips. They were perfectly moist and the batter was absolutely delicious and flaky. The fries were seasoned with pepper and salt and very tasty - just the right texture. They also had a great selection of local beers on tap.

My husband and I recently had dinner there for a "date night". The decor is very nice, however, it was a freezing cold night and every time someone came in the door, we got a frigid blast of cold air. Not pleasant. Service was ok. Our server was very nice, but not really on the ball. The bread basket was a disapointment. Two bread sticks, two crackers and two nice rolls. Not warm, not enough. The salad did not come with a meal, and it was nine dollars for a wedge of iceberg, with some blue cheese and nuts on the side. Dinner was so so. I had a steak, asked for it to be med well. It was charred on the outside but strangley red on the top of the meat and brown on the bottom inside. My husbands food was good. Food very pricey. We don't mind paying top dollar, IF everything is done top shelf and it sadly was not. Probably would not return unless someone else was paying.

Went to dinner with people from work, and we had such a wonderful meal. Chef Peter Agostinelli did and outstanding job,and our wonderful server Greg took great care of us. James Hocking the General Manager, made all of us feel welcome. He has put together a wonderful team at the Exeter Inn.

Went for New Years eve dinner,
There was a cold air vent coming in next to the table that we had to cover with a menu.
Our waitress showed up 20 minutes later , we ordered, then she took off to get a wine list, we waited in vain so i went to the bar and bought two glasses of wine .
Meantime the table next to us that arrived 10 minutes after us had finished their first course.
A kitchen staff member brought our starter, when we wanted another glass of wine with our main course, I had to go back to the bar to buy wine and bring it to the table.
Now I understand that it is busy, but the manager should have allowed for that and brought on competent service staff to cater to the guests.
Incidentally the 2 glasses of wine at the bar came to $16 whereas the menu had a rate per glass for the same wine at $12 a glass, so by serving ourselves we saved $4 a glass.

Epoch has been a favorite whenever we are in Exeter. From the Kobe beef "sliders" and oyster "shots" on the bar menu to the more creative and larger portions from the dining room, the food at Epoch is probably the best in Exeter.

A couple of comments on the room, it's long and has unusual lighting, and it can be loud. So if you want to have a quiet conversation, ask for a banquette table. They seat 5 or 6, but unless you are early on a Friday or Saturday, you will probably can be seated where you ask to be and I think will be happier "out of the noise" of the dining room. Also you will find that during "weddding season" there will be lots of wedding guests in the bar; and why not, the hotel is a primo venue for weddings.

We have been there when a wedding reception has broken up and all the guests have come into the bar. This can make for quite a crowd, and with an occasional differing of opinions, it can mean fireworks. Or free drinks, depending...
