The hotel setting is stunning. The hotel is a gem, with its high ceilings, Tiffany glass, great facilities and fascinating history. We spent a week-end there in October. The trees were slightly passed their prime, but still beautiful. The staff are wonderfully helpful. The room was a little tired, and curiously had only one nighttable and lamp (which housekeeping corrected for us). The bathroom was very nice. We had a little problem eating lunch - all the places in the hotel had huge waits. Dinner reservations are a must.

When we arrived we were told we were "upgraded". We were celebrating our 25th Anniversary and had made our reservations in Feb for a mountain view room. Our upgrade was a two bedroom suite with scaffolding view. We were given the excuse that the rooms were taken because checkin was at 3pm according to Chris and it was only 3:30. I was surprised esp since I had called earlier in the morning to see if we could checkin earlier since we were arriving sooner then we planned. Imagine my surprise to find out that our room can be given to someone else in half an. hour from the start of checkin time. I called about our room regarding the view of scaffolding which was not even on the moutain view side. Chris offered to discount our room and said he could see if he could find a room the next day. we decided to go to dinner. so as we were leaving our room to go to dinner we see another couple being moved to another room with a better view because of the scaffolding issue. I then went to the front desk and wanted to know how they got another room and Chris wasn't certain he could find one for us.Alicia was at the desk now and I had to explain everything all over again and to mention that a two separate bedroom suite doesn't actually enhance our anniversary experience as Chris was selling it. To my surprise she apologized and said she would find us a room for the next day and she called within half an hour with a room number and with a mountain view. I felt she cared more about customer serice then Chris did. Overall we loved the food, grounds and the views.
We feel Chris should have been more up front and less deceitful.

We stayed one night and it was one of those places that you are sad to leave.Service was outstanding. The main diningroom is formal for dinner, but the other dining room (Bretton) is closed on Monday and Tuesday so we ate at Stickneys (another dining room) and that was excellent anyway. The room was spacious and was well equipped and lit. The town of Littleton is 20 mins away and has some nice shops-French Sisters is an outstanding little restaurant that the concierge recommended. We paid less to stay here than at the Hilton in Burlington and I would not go to another Hilton after staying at that one.We regretted not staying here longer.

I would have given this hotel 4 stars....until I received my check-out statement. There was an erroneous charge in excess of $60 listed as 3 people for breakfast in the main dining room. We called the front desk to let them know of the error, took the statement to the front desk. They said they would investigate. Half an hour later, after the investigation, the desk clerk handed me a signed receipt and said "you had high tea for 2 people." I said we did not have high tea, and showed her that the signature on the receipt was a name nothing like ours. "You didn't sign that?" No, I did not, and have no idea who did. The hotel finally removed the mistaken charge but I found it quite disturbing that the error was initially detailed as a breakfast bill for 3 people, then became a high tea bill for 2 , signed by someone with a very different name, who gave our room number. Also, we had the uncomfortable feeling that the onus was on us. Had we needed to catch a plane, or been under any other pressure of time, resolving this would have been more than just disturbing. The hotel seems to have a dangerously loose policy for allowing patrons to make charges to room numbers without verification. So.... CHECK YOUR FINAL BILL CAREFULLY FOR MISTAKEN ROOM CHARGES.
That said, this is a grand old hotel with terriffic views and great history. A complimentary tour is offered twice daily and well worth 30 minutes. Our guide was delightful.
Our Room: We had a king size bed, mountainview room. It was well tended, and had a beautiful view of the mountains and grounds. There were plenty of drawers and a decent size closet with hangers, iron board. Two long thick terry robes. Nice toiletries. High ceiling. There is no room safe. Thin walls -- we could hear the people in the next room using the bathroom.
Upstairs/Downstairs: There are 2 small elevators across from the front desk, one with an operator. The corridors to rooms are lengthy. It was quite a hike from the elevator to our room, which was located at the very end of the hallway. This was not a problem for us, but it might be for others. If so, ask for a room close to the elevator. There is a grand staircase, great for getting downstairs but more of a challenge to walk up to the 3rd and 4th levels.
Dining: If you want to have dinner in the main dining room, make your reservation well in advance of your stay, unless you like eating at 8:30pm. Stickneys is a more casual restaurant on the ground level, a cozy atmosphere, and good food. Depending on who is tending bar, you might even score an absolutely perfect dry gin martini. Our waiter for two nights, Bruno, was friendly and accommodating. A house specialty is the lobster macaroni and cheese.
We also dined at the Bretton Arms, located about 300 yards from the main hotel. It was excellent, see separate review.
For breakfast, the main dining room offers a breakfast buffet at $20 per person. The Bretton Arms offers an ala carte breakfast with table service. Somewhat pricey, but this hotel is not the cheap seats. Or you can get coffee and a muffin, pastry, or bagel at Morsels down on the ground floor. We did not partake of breakfast at the resort. There's a great little restaurant a few miles away, Monroe's Place, that serves up a tasty breakfast at reasonable prices (see separate review).
Lobby: Many comfortable seating areas, some with tables, a large fireplace, checkers, puzzles.
Porch: A wonderful long, covered porch with great views runs all along the back of the hotel.
Pool: The outdoor pool is heated year-round, and there are heated sidewalks to the pool. The indoor pool is in the spa and I believe there is an additional "resort fee" to use it.
Spa: We didn't do the spa.
Television: Not that anyone comes here to watch TV, but be advised that all of the rooms have limited analog television channels with weak signal. The TVs in public areas, however, are HD. We were told this difference is due to some sort of $$$ conflict with the cable provider.
Internet Access: Complimentary wifi throughout the hotel and in the rooms. There is also a small computer room with 3 computers and a printer.
Parking: The guest parking lot is about 100-200 yards from the hotel. Valets will shuttle your car back and forth (bring plenty of $1 bills), and there is a shuttle bus on demand.
Staff: The staff is impressively well trained, friendly, polite, and accommodating.
Favorite activities: We did the Bretton Woods Canopy Tour (see separate review) and highly recommend it. There is a family film shown at the hotel in the evening, not well attended, but we enjoyed it.

Room Tip: Ask for a mountain view room. The best mountain views are on the back side of the hotel.

I was looking forward to going to this hotel since I read so many positive comments here. I have to say my husband and I were very disappointed in our stay. The property itself is very nice with a magnificent view of the mountains. That is the only thing positive about this overpriced hotel. They have nonstop tours which is very annoying since they take up all the space with no consideration for the guests (who are paying $400+ a night). The restaurants are below average with waitstaff who really don't care. The room we were staying in was set up like a dorm room with 2 beds on opposite walls and very outdated. Talk about romantic! We stayed at Holiday Inn's that were better than this. Take my advice and stay somewhere else.

The Mount Washington Resort is one of those iconic hotels that everyone should visit, especially during foliage season. The area is beautiful and the grounds magnificent. The wrap around porch is a great place to relax in the evening overlooking the white mountains.

The interior of the rooms and hotels is well done as well, nice without being ostentatious.

We used the visit as a quick weekend getaway from Boston and would absolutely come back in the future.

Warning: They are doing construction right now but seem to handle it quite well. Our booked room was under construction so they moved us elsewhere and upgraded us to a suite.

Arrived on Oct 9, 2012. The website reports 60 million upgrade concluded, work still going on.
LUXURY ROOMS with character. Nonsense, old fashion furniture needing thrown out. No space to open 2 suitcases without restricting floor space. Just about enough space to get between window and bed. IRONING BOARD with a hole in. Just a shabby place. Some staff very indifferent.

Don't bother making a special effort to come here for the bedroom.
Corridors offer more space
