“A little glimpse of a by gone era”
Reviewed December 20, 2011

Mount Washington is definitely a place to go to slow down. Nestled among the mountains, it is situated in a setting second to none. We stayed in a very comfortable suite with a panoramic view. Every staff member we came across was friendly, helpful, courteous and resourceful. The rooms were inviting, extremely comfortable and clean. The hotel itself is elegant and beautiful and brings one back to a time gone by. If you want to relax and be pampered, you won't be disappointed in this gem of a resort.

Love the place, will stay here again. Some things you may find helpful to know:

- They host a large number of weddings. There will be lots of commotion in the resort on most weekends.

- The walls are thin, the doors old and authentic. They are not built for sound-proofing. Be prepared if you are in-house on busy wedding nights. Nothing crazy but some traffic and noise will make it hard to sleep much before 11.

- The resort has nice flat panel TV's but no access to HD programming, therefore picture quality is pretty poor by today's standards. Didn't matter to me but might bother some.

- Only one hand-operated elevator so be prepared to climb stairs and have long walks down corridors. No big deal to some but if you have physical limitations it could matter.

- Downstairs restaurant, Stickney's is amazingly hot in the late fall and winter/spring. Blazing hot. I found it very uncomfortable in spite of the fine service and good food.

- Ballroom dining room is beautiful, reminiscent of the atrium room at The Breakers in Palm Beach.

-They have a fixed price all you can eat weekday menu at $20 - excellent value. It's essentially a buffet where you don't have to serve yourself. On the weekends it IS a buffet.

- Heated outdoor pool is a must. Quite a novel experience. I'm surprised more cold-weather resorts don't offer this. My kids loved it and it was 25 degrees outside.

- Gym is a good+. Cardio equipment and a large number of Cybex machines. Towels and headphones readily available.

- Self-park and save the valet money. Not a bad walk in from the lot.

Awesome place. Very much like the Sagamore in Bolton Landing, NY and a bit like the Chatham Bar's Inn on the Cape. Go, stay and enjoy.

Just returned from a ladies' weekend at this grand old hotel. Adjoining rooms were cozy and comfy, with a non-working but charming fireplace and crown molding. Bed was on the soft side, but still slept well. My room was close to the elevator so I was awakened by hallway noise, but, that seems to be the norm at hotels nowadays, doesn't it? Nice towels, products in the restroom. Lobby was grand but I wish they pump in the potpourri smell,
Great drinks at the restaurants, bars. I loved my various manhattans, and we had a delicious baked brie at the bar overlooking the grounds. The casual dining is much better than the fancy restaurant, which was hurt by a lack of coordination. Our wine came after our appetizers and coffee took forever. There was a grand bread service for one slice of bread --they really should have passed again. My frisee salad had too much frisee, it was hard to eat. The bacon was cold and the poached egg had a soapy texture. Steak frites was acceptable, but it really needed a green vegetable and the fries were super soggy. The room was fusty and faded. I wish the kitchen and service were better with details. So much promise! Loved the outdoors fire pit and the heated pool! Would definitely go back for a weekend but not to the restaurant.

I was at the hotel for business. Historic building and age of the resort gave me the mixed feeling. It was historic building so som flaws were expected. Staff was excellent. Technolgy was poor. TV never worked even after reporting it few times only one channel. Internet was slow. Torn towels was sub par for the class of resort. Fireworks at night was memorable. Restaurant was very good. It is worth trying.

We did not stay at this hotel as we did not know that it existed when planning our trip to New Hampshire. We were staying at Attitash Mountain Village on the other side of Mount Washington. We saw an image of the hotel in the tourist publications and decided to keep an eye out for it as we explored.

When we spotted the hotel in its stunning setting, with a light dusting of snow all around, it looked like something out of a movie. We walked the grounds a bit and headed inside. The huge fireplace, the carpets, the stonework, the furniture -- all is lovely. This absolutely gorgeous, technicolor-perfect hotel has been lovingly restored to its former spendor in its glory days of about a century ago. And someone is keeping just about every inch of the intricate woodwork clean and dust-free.

Since our plans wouldn't allow us to squeeze in a one-day stay here, we hope to come back in the next year or two. But we did have lunch at Stickney's, their "casual" restaurant. The level of service at Stickney's was what you would find in a four-star restaurant in San Francisco. We were served by an incredibly attentive waiter, as well as an assistant waiter and a bus person. Each was pleasant with a hard-to-find level of professionalism and courtesy. The food was absolutely outstanding, perfect portions, very reasonable prices. Wish we could move Stickney's to our neighborhood. But the views and the gorgeous surroundings were also an important part of a fantastic and unplanned experience.

Room Tip: We did not stay at the hotel ... just dined here.

My girlfriend and I stayed overnight on November 18th.
We are from Ottawa and the drive here through Vermont and New Hampshire is absolutely delicious!! It's a definite change from the highways around here.

Pulling up to the resort from the highway is like something out of a movie! The entire front of the resort is so majestic with a lit driveway and Christmas decorations peppered throughout was done amazingly.

Check-in was easy with valet parking and a bellman for our luggage. I never use valet, but there is a 20$ resort fee that you have to pay on check-in, which includes valet, so I felt better about our indulgence. The actual check-in was very smooth and they were accommodating in giving us a mountain-view room despite it being a very busy weekend with weddings etc. Our bellman disappeared momentarily, so we eventually lugged our luggage over to the elevator and made our own way.

The room itself was on the 4th floor and it was exquisite! Very high ceilings and very spacious...perfect for us to plop our luggage in the middle and relax. Flat screen TV, king-size bed, huge closet, free wifi. The bathroom was very large and the shower worked great with plenty of hot water in the morning. It included 2 robes as well. There was one of those old cast iron radiators(more on this later) on the wall that provided heat to the room as well as a ceiling fan/light in the middle.

Exploring the hotel is an adventure in itself - lots of seating in the main lobby - fireplaces, couches, tables with checkers and chess set up. They also had a really really big gingerbread house that you could walk into and take pictures. The veranda that goes around the whole lodge is pretty crazy and had great photo ops in the daytime with the mountains as a backdrop.

They have a 24-hour shuttle service that takes you from the main lodge to anywhere else on the resort, including Fabyan's, an old train station turned into a restaurant. We dined there for dinner and it was great. Pretty casual - not so crowded, but lots of children/families. It was pretty cold that night so the shuttle was a definite plus to get around the resort that night!

The only gripe was our quality of sleep. Overnight, the radiator made a lot of clicking and whirring sounds that were enough to wake us up. I am a heavy sleeper, so it was pretty loud. The sounds would only go for a minute or two but then stop for an hour to allow us to return to sleep, but it definitely woke us up about 5-6 times. We told the front desk to make sure to have it looked at for future guests.

There was free coffee in the lobby, which was a nice touch - we had pigged out the night before so we weren't feeling up to breakfast, the dining room looked HUGE and decorated beautifully.

Check-out was simple and it was great to watch the valet SPRINT to our car in the parking lot to bring it back :)

In the end, we would definitely return here and would recommend this hotel to our friends and family! But I guess we'd double-check the radiator before settling in the room.

Room Tip: Ask for a mountain-view room. Free coffee in the morning. Wifi included. Free 24-hour shuttle av...
