Great trip for any family looking for mountain adventure without the climb! Make sure it's a nice day- although that's no guarantee of what you will find at the top!
Great way to spend 3 hours of your time while in the Bretton Woods area.

We took the old steam powered cog engine (the first one of the day). It was terrific! Looking at the track going up the mountain from the base station, it's hard to imagine going up. Loved the huffing and chuffing of the engine, the whistle, the rockety rocking motion, and being tilted so far back you wonder, "Why is the building we're passing tipping over? Oh, it's US!" I don't go for smarmy cutesy stuff, and was worried the conductor was going to talk that way to us, but it was fine. He was knowledgeable and humorous without overdoing it. Very professional, in fact. Incredible views. It was rainy and windy right at the top, but I'd say it was still worth the money even so. For me, the amount of time at the top was just right before going back down - about 35 or 40 minutes. My mother said in all her 80 years, she never experienced anything so fun and exciting.

Great views, landscapes, and fun. Thrilling but not scary... a must do in the Northcountry.

With good weather it's worth hundreds of dollars!! With poor weather it's a long trip to nothing. people are either going to be amazed or very disappointed.. Nothing in between and it's all a gamble. On a nice day it will be one of the coolest things you will ever do. If you have several days in the area do not make plans ahead of time. watch the weather and try to pick a ggod one. Early in the day is usually a better bet than later on. The Cog railway station is also a great place to hike up to the top in only a few hours. If it's a nice day, bring another SD card for the photos. I have only taken the train to the top once and lucked out all the way up and down. I took about 140 pics with 50-55 being keepers. I have hiked up 11 times and driven up three. If you check out the www.mountwashington.org/ website you will see that the peak is in the clouds more often than not. Good luck!!

We took an anniversary trip for 4 days to New Hampshire in October. Absolutely, beautiful scenery and this Cog Railroad was one of the highlights of our trip. We would highly recommend it. It took about 2 - 2/12 hours round trip, but we enjoyed every moment. They allowed us 1/2 hour at the top of the mountain, an hour would have been more preferred to allow us to get a cup of coffee and visit the gift shop. By the time we walked around for a few moments viewing the scenery, we barely had time to visit the rest room, and they were blowing the train whistle to board the train for the experience back down. It was worth the trip don't miss this one!
