Owner description: Climb to the top of Mount Washington on the world's first mountain-climbing Cog Railway trains!
Reviewed June 28, 2014

First, I was hesitant to pay $66 per person, by the time I was at the top I thought 'so worth every penny'. Fantastic, very safe. Trains go slow and you enjoy the ride. "Brakeman" are talking and telling you about the mountain the entire way up. Everyone should do this trip at least once.

Loved it.

The railway and its personalise narrated journey to the top of Mount Washington is very good and worth a trip. However there are a number of points to note

1. If it's not good weather, you won't see much from the top
2. Even if it is good weather, the weather changes very quickly, so you may still not get a good view at the top
3. The tickets for ascent and descent are timed, and trains often get very busy - don't miss your train, or you could be walking.
4. The tickets included free access to a movie but this only runs once per hour, so if you hit the wrong train to the top, you will miss the showing at the top.
5 very expensive..... indeed we travelled from Boston to New York, or from New York to Washington, for less than the prise of a ticket on this very short railway.
6. Even when it is very sunny down at the base station, it can still be very cold at the too, so take warm clothing.

This all sounds negative, but it is actually a very good view from the top, and an excellent way to get there. If we had more time we would have hiked down, but as we were only in the area for the day, this wasn't a practical proposition for us due to our tight schedule.

Don't miss this trip up the mountain. It's definitely worth the time and cost, but highly recommend making a reservation.
Also recommend taking a warm jacket or fleece. We had a 17 degree wind chill on June 20!

My husband and I had the opportunity to experience the ride the cog train to Mount Washington on June 22nd. It was a wonderful experience and extremely educational.
The Brake Men narrated the trip up to Mt Washington and again on the return. They were very knowledgeable of the history of the train and the surrounding area.
Definitely take the time to explore the museuem and displays both at the base station and at Mt Washington.
