Owner description: Climb to the top of Mount Washington on the world's first mountain-climbing Cog Railway trains!

We ordered our tickets ahead of time and were lucky to have a clear almost warm and calm day. The views both on the way up and down and of course at the summit were fantastic. The cog railroad is an engineering marvel that gives you a slow roller coaster ride to the summit and back down. At the top check out the building chained to the ground with logging chain to keep it in place during the high winds. Even on a warm fall day at the base station a warm winter coat was a blessing at the summit. The conductors are informative and friendly.

I was a bit hesitant at first because of the high cost person person (can't we just DRIVE to the top?!!) but I'm sooo glad we did it! Took a chance by booking way in advance for the 0815 so we could do the steam train, but that gamble paid off big time. We ended up choosing a beautiful, clear, almost warm day to visit the summit of Mt Washington. Our operator/tour guide was great. The entire experience was simply magical. Afterwards I had to spend a small fortune in their gift shop just to make certain we'd remember this day! I would recommend that anyone visiting this area do it, and wake up early to make certain you do the old fashioned steam version!!

Very very steep cliffs, if you don't like the incline when you first go up a roller coaster you won't like the cog. It is a very slow - extremely steep - overlooking cliffs...
Kind of a cool experience lots of historical facts on the way up.
Be prepared to be cold at the top.

Having got up early to ride the only steam departure of the day (0815) we had a pleasant and interesting trip two-thirds of the way to the top, due to 70m.p.h. and freezing conditions.

To be fair, they told us when we first arrived that the train wasn't going all the way to the top due to the adverse weather and refunded the portion of our pre-paid tickets.

One major gripe about many 'attractions' in the USA is that there is no guide book, although the conductor of the train was very knowledgeable and informative. Some of the information might be on the website, but it would be nice to have a souvenir book giving the fascinating history of the line and it's rolling stock and photos of the line in action and its magnificent views on a clear day!

Ironically, the following day was beautiful and sunny and we drove up the private highway in the car to the top!

This was a much better way to get to the top of Mt. Washington than driving. I thought fifteen minutes at the top was a little short. But once we got up there and it was pretty chilly up there, fifteen minutes was more than enough time. Not to mention that a permanent cloud was surrounding the top of the mountain. It was well worth it though.
