Owner description: Climb to the top of Mount Washington on the world's first mountain-climbing Cog Railway trains!
Reviewed October 21, 2013

After reading many reviews before going on our fall foliage trip and from smart travel describing
that this was a world famous cog railway up Mt. Washington over 6,000 feet at summit, we decided to take this train ride. At $64. for adult and $59 for senior is indeed very costly. Beware that they charge $2 internet fee yet not able to print own tickets. We went up on a lovely day, sunny, calm, temp in the 60's. We could not hear the conductor/brakeman's narration/talk because of noise and poor audio system especially coming down the mountain, the brakeman was facing front and talking with his back towards us. On the way up, we saw rocks and more rocks and coming down same vegetation again & again but no fall foliage color in sight. It was a different experience having not been in cog train before, other than that we did not feel it was money well spent.

I would only recommend spending good money to head up the mountain on a clear day, and from what we learned, there are not many of those at the top of this 6200 foot peak. Mount Washington is infamous for severe weather and some of the highest winds anywhere in the world. These crooks had no problem selling us tickets ($128 for two tickets) on a day that you could not see your hand in front of you on the mountain top. They do not post conditions at the base where tickets are sold. Buyer beware! We were miserable and the hour at the top felt like an eternity. The guides were trying too hard to get tips which was annoying.

Thank you for commenting on your recent visit to the Cog. You are correct, Mount Washington is famous for having the most challenging weather in the world. We are sorry that you did not enjoy your visit, but for many visitors, the unique weather is part of the experience of Mount Washington. We do post daily reports of the summit conditions near every ticket window and in our gift shop so that our passengers may be properly prepared for their mountain experience. Our ticket agents are always available to answer any questions visitors may have as well.

We loved the ride to the top of Mount Washington. As the Cog RR slowly climbed to the top, the brakeman/host entertained us with interesting and humorous tidbits about the mountains and the area. The ride lasts about 50 minutes. The time on the top of the mountain was about 45 minutes but went really fast as you want look at the view in every direction. So peaceful and quiet. Where there is usually cold and wind, our day had zero wind and the temperature was about 60-65 degrees. Perfect. The ride down was very interesting as our host then became the brakeman. Where going up, he shared his humor, he was serious going down. The railway car is not operated by a computer somewhere; it is manually operated by him and the others in the engine car. That made for an exciting ride down the mountain with gorgeous views. Will do this again.

We went the second week of October. Because of the good reviews and the ads, we were expecting beautiful scenery on the way up. The foliage was gone. We saw piles of rocks, same kind of vegetation all throughout, couldn't hear the narrator (too noisy), not much view on top...definitely overpriced. The cog is amazing so it may be worth your while to visit the museum, read up on it and watch how it runs without having to ride on it

What an amazing way to summit Mt. Washington! Our "brakeman" Josh, was relatively new, but a super guide! He does his job well, and was so pleasant and accommodating.
Fascinating to see the railway and trains too when you are on another summit. Made us really appreciate the effort that went into and continues to go into maintaining this railway!
