Owner description: Climb to the top of Mount Washington on the world's first mountain-climbing Cog Railway trains!
Reviewed October 24, 2012

Quite expensive for what it is ,,at 62.00 per person you would do better to drive yourself . The scenery is more interesting and you can get out for pictures. You could drive at your own pace and make it a full half day excursion.

The train had an mechanical problems and stopped on the mountain - and we were stuck on the tracks immobile for over an hour , without being able to step out - go to the restroom - or get some food.

Not even an apology or a credit of some sort. Bad experience !! poor customer service !!

This is an excilting ride to the top of Mount Washinton at 6288 feet. The ride is bumpy but steady. The going trademark is the "World"s Worst Weather" We got a real taste! It was 62 degrees when we left for the top. On top it was 35 degrees with 65 to 70 mph winds. It was raining lightly with fog. We could see for about 50 feet. It was well worth the trip. The personnel on the train were very helpful. Too bad we didn't get to see the surrounding landscape and view!

I took the Cog on Oct. 17, 2012. It was a blast!! Make sure you book online or reserve your spot. This books up - FAST! Dress in layers, base is nice & toasty. The top of the mountain is COLD and OH SO WINDY!! The weather was perfect for our 8:30 chug up the mountain.
It is pricey, but worth it. I LOVED the whole experience. Take your camera, the windows on the train do open. The view is breathtaking! You listen to the history of the train and the mountain.

You get about 50-55 minutes on Mt. Washington. On bad weather days the train only goes part way. The views are SO worth the price! The giftstore is small, there are 2. Make sure you check out the store near the museum as well. I didnt have enough time to go to the Museum.
Going down the mountain is a little faster than going up. You can't hear the audio though, the train makes alot of noise.
This was my first time visiting NH, this really made my trip memorable!! I loved it!! Go-I recommend it!

Didn't make reservations way in advance due to uncertain weather conditions and only one possible day to take the trip. Day prior to our visit it snowed at the top! Wanted to go early in the day but by the time we checked to make a reservation online day before all trains before 12:30 were booked. Took that option and were glad we did reserve day before as they were turning people away on the day we rode.

Base station area is very nice and it's fun to watch the other trains come and go before your departure. Weather at the base was cloudy and in the 50's. Weather at the top was cloudy and about 20 degrees cooler and much windier. Be sure to take extra jackets, gloves etc. to wear while exploring the summit area. Views were pretty good at the top but clouds obstructed views in the distance. Stay at the top was enjoyable. Fun to explore.

Time at the top was enough for us (about 55 minutes) and we did check out the store, museum briefly, restroom break, walked to all views outdoors and the summit sign. Then got back in line for the ride down and boarded within 5 minutes of getting in line.

Cog train itself is neat but seating is a bit uncomfortable and small windows make it difficult to take photos especially when it's cold as everyone keeps windows up to stay warm. Ride up took longer then 1 hour as they had trains running 1 minute apart and we had to stop for awhile to let 2 trains pass on the way down.

Conductors are OK. Would like more info on the train, mountain, etc. rather then jokes and such. Would have enjoyed a bit more quiet time to enjoy the view rather then listening to attempts at humor on microphones that crackle and don't work well which causing the conductor to repeat most everything said.

Overall the cog train was a way to get to the top of Mt. Washington without driving the rental car. If in my own car I definitely would have chosen the auto road over the cog train. You still have to pay but way less then then expensive cog train and you can take your time and stay as long as you want at the top. Experience was enjoyable but not outstanding.

Fabulous experience. The views are fabulous. Don't buy your ticket in advance - particularly if you are going during off season. We timed our visit by staying a couple of extra days elsewhere so that we could have a clear day. Would suggest you ride up on the right and back on the left. Dress warmly since it is very cold and windy at the top.
