“Amazing but expensive!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2011

I had a friend visiting from Baltimore for 4th of July and he really wanted to do this so we drove the 3.5 hours to Mt. Washington. I heard it can be booked so I bought the tickets in advance for $62 each! Of course, when we arrived it was raining and very cloudy and foggy but they have a no exchanges or cancellations policy. Why I do not know. I can understand no cancellations but no exchanges? We were staying overnight and the next day was supposed to be beautiful so we wanted to exchange but NO! I would keep this in mind if buying in advance. If you're into trains this is for you. It's a painfully long 40 minute ride up the mountain at 6 MPH (and the same back down). They leave you at the top for an hour which is way more than you need when you can't see 20 feet in front of you and it's pouring rain. I'm sure it's amazing on a beautiful day. However...check the weather ON TOP of Mt. Washington before you go, not at the bottom. They can vary greatly.

“An Experince you won't forget”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2011

If you can do it, this is a great experience. May be too much for the very faint of heart but it is a very safe ride. The scenery is outstanding going up and down. Try for the left side of the car going up if you can (you will need to be there 30 minutes before ride).
My only complaint would be the conversion from steam to diesel. They only run the steam at 08:30 each day and it is much more interesting than than diesel. They are missing out on a good niche market by making it harder to take the steam.

Really worth the trip. Great experience very helpful knowledgable and entertaining staff running the service. The views are awesome and its good value considering the investment they have made in the trains carriages and experience.

“Great Railway adventure and great place to work!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2011

I have to say that the cog is a very special place unlike any other in the world. The weather is unpredictable which the railway makes no secret about in there advertising. they go in all weather and regardless of the weather you get a fantastic ride on a train you dont get to ride everyday! Ive read reviews in here complaining of weather and no refunds and such..let me be the first to say that people need to take the cog for what it is. a very steep railway up a mountain known for bad weather> More often than not the weather at the top is predictable plus reports are always posted near the ticket window. there is a really nice museum, gift shop and cafeteria at the bottom as well as at the top. Enjoy your ride. Itll be the time of your life. Very different but wonderful!

“Cog Railway to the past”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2010

We jumped at the chance to ride the Mt. Washington Cog Railway. This was the first way of transportation to the highest peak in New England and the first Cog Railway ever built. It's still powered by coal and 2 men alternate shoveling it in for 3 hours straight. It's a long haul up the mountain but worth the wait. It was 60 degrees at the foot of the mountain and about 20 degrees at the peak. There you can tour the original motel if you will, and learn about history. There's also a gift shop, place for you to sit and eat or drink something warm, and a look out walk to view all of New England from the highest peak. It's a pretty awesome sight from up there. When we arrived, there was snow and 3ft long ice attached to the entrance rail to the main building. Many hikers and tourists give it a well used and appreciated atmosphere. What a great experience! You'll listen to a history lesson, experience Jacob's Latter, and ride in an original Cog car. At the bottom, you can walk through a Cog Railway museum.
