“Forget this place”
Reviewed July 25, 2010

We were driving along is the children spotted the pool, which is OK. We booked a room for four and as the children didn't want to drive anymore, they ran off to the pool.
The room was very tatty and old. Later that evening it started to rain and the rear part of the room was leaking rainwater.
The whole places has a 1958 atmosphere, which is ok when everything is well maintained and in proper condition

We would dispute the "old and tatty" description. Most of "our people" find our rooms spacious, clean, well maintained, comfortable and actually enjoy our 1960's flavor. Perhaps they left a window open for the rain to come in? We are the first to admit that Sky Valley is not for everyone and folks looking for the sterile look and feel and 2010 amenities probably belong at the Holiday Inn/Marriott type accomodations constructed within the last couple of years.

We rented a cottage for one night at the Sky Valley. For the money it was a good place to stay. We chose it because we could sleep in a place that was away from road noise and near the Saco River behind us. The cottage itself was clean enough, and the amenities were as described, but the woodsy area around it had old cast off heating oil tanks and other detritous! Amazing they would just leave that junk around! You can't see the stuff from the front of the cabins, but as soon as we looked into the woods behind us, there it was. Anyway, that's why the cleanliness was rated less than it could be. Pay for a dump run, folks!
The staff was very friendly. There were a lot of little notes and admonishments stuck around the cottage, but they were actually kind of funny, and you could understand why they felt the need to put them up. Incredibly, there were hardly any mosquitoes, gnats, or flies - yay! The Saco River was low, but still pretty.
Sky Valley is in a great location to do stuff around the White Mountains. Compared to other places, in the area, I would stay here again.

That's a good point about the old tanks and metal...We have tried to keep it within our fenced off area out of sight. In June we removed a big part of it and we apologize that some still remains. It has not escaped our "radar" and is on our "to do" list.

Our second visit to Sky Valley felt like we were visiting family. There are two things I love about Sky Valley--Even at full occupancy we never felt like we were on top of anyone else or cramped and there are so many ways to spend uncanned, uncommercialized time just enjoying being together--whether its strolling by the Saco, playing in the pool or running like mad barefoot through the lawn. You can sit outside at the picnic table and there is calm. I got up early one morning and realized that my quick step outside was about 15 minutes long because I actually had the ability to think and relax. This is a very family friendly place and it was so nice to see families spending time together on the expansive lawn area with playground and by the outdoor fireplace having a barbecue--the hotel rents grills for a very nominal fees or you can take advantage of the free hibachi that uses charcoal with two really nice areas with ample spaces set aside for family gatherings (included with your $5 propane rental). Both barbecue spaces offer enough space for little girls to do cartwheels on the lawn while the rest of the family plays touch football.

Our two and a half year old cried when we left "his hotel" and we had a very hard time ripping him away from the pool which had a little beach like area for young children to walk into at their height which he loved. They have also added toddler size slides and little tikes like playground equipment. The staff was very friendly and this year our apartment had a very clean kitchen with a full size fridge that let us fit the items in our cooler in it and have a little more room to stretch out. The overall feel of the apartment was that we were staying at a long lost elder aunt or grandparent's NH getaway. If you want the newest, latest and greatest everything then this is not your place--this is a cozy country cottage atmosphere complete with little quirks here and there. There is nothing cookie cutter about this place so if you stayed at a Marriott recently and it didn't meet your high standards I would go ahead and spend the 60-100 dollars more a night to stay at a more upscale resort. When I go away I hate paying through the nose for having access to amenities but getting let down because I don't want to go near them due to overcrowding and that is NOT a problem here. Is Sky Valley the place for you? If given the option of nature over new you choose nature and If you would rather see your kids playing ball outside than checking out all the cable channels, and if having a place your family can spend true time together is more important than the age of the sofa than this might just be your Northern paradise.

The accomodations and amenetites at Sky Valley were exactly what we needed to truly relax as a family with a four year old child. A roomy suite, on-site playground equipment, fields for running in, brooks and woods for exploring, a child-friendly pool area..all surrounded by the mountains. Perfect for young families and all very close to Mt. Washington attractions and StoryLand. We will definitely be back!

For the past 5 years we travel to NH for a family getaway after not being completely happy with our previous place to stay. We often travel with the grandparents and friends. Last year we stayed here for the first time and will make this our new place to stay. The area is quiet. The accomadations (cabins) are nice. The kids were allowed to ride their bikes which was a huge hit. ~Dayna Bangor, Maine

Our stay (4 nights) at Sky Valley was very pleasant. This was our first time at Sky Valley, although not our first to the area. The reasonably priced motel rooms, while by no means modern, were clean and adequate for our needs. Having a mivrowave, coffee maker and small refrigerator in our room was most convenient. The free Continental Breakfast was a good way to start each day.
Within a short walking distance behind the motel rooms is the Saco River. We swam and tubed in the river. There are extensive grounds to take a walk on, or for kids to run around. And it's set back from the road. The walk-in pool is fabulous - large with a small roped off area for little ones.
All this at an affordable price and with the beaufiful White Mountains as a backdrop!

My Husband and I went with friends to have a peaceful and quiet time together. We Stopped at Sky Valley Motel. Were we found our room to be good size with two double beds. The room was clean and and smelled of fresh mountain air. When I woke up I went outside to take some fall pictures. to my amazedment I didn't have to go far . I could see the mountain across the steet. And trees with leafs of many colors. The beautiful birch trees stood tall you could see the white of the bark and the golden leafs peek through.
This place has so much history and interesting story as told by the wife of the owner.
Life is busy but I decided to Listen While enjoying my morning tea and toast in the sun room off the pool. As I was listening to the story of how the place was started , I looked around and got to see pictures og how it looked in the 50's and what stands now. On the door I saw what the orignal owners looked like and it was some what comforting to now the business was still in the family and run by the son. If you have children there is a big yard and place to swing and play ball.
I enjoyed my stay and made it a point to tell them and everybody else!
Thanks I will be back next year!
