The Mackay Mansion offers a great view of how life was in Virginia City, NV. during the silver boom on the Comstock.

“Beauty and Class Beyond Compare”
Reviewed July 2, 2012

Bill and I were blown away to learn about the Mackay's; their life together and that gorgeous home in Virginia City. I never dreamed such opulence existed in the late 1800s in Nevada. They had the first working toilet west of the Mississippi River, beautiful furniture from France, chandeliers in every room, gorgeous wallpapered walls, golden mirrors, lace curtains, velvet drapes, Aubusson carpets and on and on it goes. Our guide was Margaret, a retired school teacher, who was very knowledgeable and she showed us the herb garden outside and I won the prize for knowing the names of the most herbs in the garden. My prize? A division of the gardens anise. I brought it home and transplanted it and it is doing very well.

“One of the Historical homes”
Reviewed June 20, 2012

This represents the homes of the day. It was built by John Mackay, although his wife did not like the area and only lived there a short while, John Mackay came up through the ranks from a miner to supervior and then speculator and bacme rich. Nice place for an outside wedding in the yard.

“Tour guide..or visitor...couldn't tell which!”
Reviewed June 19, 2012

The tour guide wore shorts and sun glasses! I think when you are showing visitors around an historical house, the guide should be in period dress to create an old world feel. In addition, the entrance/foyer was so cluttered it looked as if something/someone had "thrown up" antiques. The one bright spot was the elegant dining room on the lowest floor.
