“STEP BACK IN TIME AND DISCOVER EDUCATION IN THE OLD WEST”

Fourth Ward School Museum
Certificate of Excellence
Attraction details
Reviewed March 14, 2013

While in Virgina City, NV be sure to check out the Fourth Ward School Museum. From the 1800's up until the mid 1900's, students filled this multi-story Victorian era schoolhouse. You can view exhibits of what life was like in the old west for children and their teachers. There are complete school rooms and the tour guide will tell you about what it must have been like for the students to sit in the drafty room while snow storms swirled in winter. The window are rippled with age and you can imagine how the children must have seen horse drawn carriages and people on horseback traveling down the street. The small gift counter is interesting and this Virginia City attraction is one not to be missed! If you are in to motorcycles, visit Virgina City on April 27 & 28, 2013 for the annual VC Gran Prix Race sponsored by Red Bull!!! This was the third time we went to the Fourth Ward School. The displays were fresh again, plus we always find something we missed. The staff is wonderful. If you see Carol Clifford, say hello as she is one of the nicest people in the world. This is a great glimpse of the past you shouldn't miss when in Virginia City!

This is a fabulous 4-story wooden building, and each room is turned into a mini-museum. We would have loved to stay longer.

A good introduction to Virginia City, without all the tourist hype. Completely supported and run locally.

We learned a great deal about life in Virginia City in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It's not just about education, but includes social and work life. Good exhibit and very nice docent.
