We were in Reno for a girls volleyball tournament the weekend of April 25-27, 2013, staying 3 nights. For those of you unfamiliar with club volleyball, it's fun but too expensive with tournaments away from home. Many in our club were staying at the Grand Sierra and at $120 a night. We just couldn't justify the cost and decided to stay elsewhere. We selected the Super 8 in Sparks/Reno since the cost was just about right. $65 a night. The drive to the convention center was about 15 minutes. Volleyball is an all day or all evening event so time in a hotel is quite minimal. So for our $ we got way more value for our money than our friends. We got a very clean, quiet room with 2 beds, thermostat that worked, clean bathroom, no gross stains anywhere. There was breakfast/newspaper in the am, and a coffee maker, and safe in our room. They got a room w/o a coffee maker and blue lights shining in at night from the outside lighting. And they got a $15 a day resort fee for a workout room and wi-fi. Many were under the impression this could be waved if you weren't going to be able to use the "resort". No. They paid it. We got free wi fi that worked just fine.
The folks who were at the hotel were of all kinds. It was safe feeling, and not uncomfortable. Across the highway ( freeway to Californian's) was a new mall called the Legends and behind it is a filled in gravel pit turned marina. Or the Fake Lake as we called it. Nice place to go for a run or walk. Nothing near the hotel though for exercise.
The staff was accommodating and the housekeeping was very flexible, water was hot all the time.
Breakfast was waffle maker, juice, coffee, bread, yougurt, instant oatmeal, cereal (frosted flakes and raisin bran style) and fruit. (apples, oranges, and banana) It looked quite meager but the front desk replaces items with a quick request, cheerfully too. My feeling is they do this to cut down on hoarding and wastefulness. So don't hesitate to ask if you want something.
So yes it wasn't the Marriott, or Hyatt but we didn't pay Marriott or Hyatt prices either. If you are looking for value this place worked.
