After 6-1/2 years of living in Sparks, we finally checked out this local restaurant/brewpub last night. I think we have found our new favorite place! I expected the beer to be good since it is brewery, but I wasn't sure what to expect on the food. We arrived about 30 minutes after they started serving dinner on a Tuesday night, and the place was pretty full. The only negative of the outing was that this meant we were relegated to the last remaining table -- in a back corner next to the door to the bathroom. I could have done without the continuous traffic and banging of that door, but we preferred not to wait for another spot, so we didn't let it bother us.
The decor and atmosphere is definitely rustic/neighborhood pub/sports bar/casual, but everything appeared to be clean and well-kept. The only exception was the litter of paper towel scraps on the ladies' room floor. They use those towels that can't help but rip when they come out of the dispenser, and it shows. The service was beyond good -- excellent, really. Once seated, we were greeted by our server almost immediately and our drink order was taken. Not being a beer expert, I asked for advice on the vast beer selection. After asking me a few questions, the server recommended the Ichthyosaur India Pale Ale (apparently a popular selection) and it was excellent. Throughout our meal, the service was attentive and thorough without being "pesty" at all. Nothing went unnoticed...even when my husband started to run out of tartar sauce for his fish.
We ordered the Shepherd's Pie, which was really delicious and a very generous portion and the Fish and Chips, also very good and generously-sized. The cucumber salad that came with the fish and chips was wonderful. We found ourselves stuffed by the end of the meal, but the food was too good to want to waste a bite.
This place definitely has a "locals" vibe...you could see lots of people exchanging greetings who knew each other. There were couples out for dinner like ourselves, guys at the bar watching the football game, skiers just back from a day on the slopes, families with kids, etc. Total tab for two meals, a soda and a beer came to just under $32. Not bad -- we would have spent that much at Chili's or Red Robin and not had half the fun or nearly as good food.
