Rail City is a relaxed, unpretentious and fun casino a couple of miles east of Reno in Sparks. But if you're visiting Reno and staying downtown, it's not worth the trouble.

The casino is terrific. Not too big, not too small, and very clean. The array of slot machines and video poker is indistinguishable from other Nevada properties, but you'll find everything here that you find at the jumbo properties elsewhere in town. The cocktail service is very good, and the floor staff is unfailingly friendly and helpful. It's a little intimidating, though, when you're the only couple in the casino the staff doesn't know by name. Rail City has low-limit blackjack, and a small poker area in the middle of the pit. Those are the only table games offered.

The food is Jekyll and Hyde. The Rail City Ale House is very, very good. The burgers, sandwiches and barbeque entrees are terrific. My wife's tried every salad on the menu, and loved them all. The prices are excellent.

The cafe/buffet is poor. The buffet is smaller than your old high school cafeteria. Half of that is a small salad bar, the other an assortment of bland, lukewarm dishes. One exception is the Monday night Asian buffet, which was pretty good. In it's defense, it's super cheap (6-8 bucks, depending on when you go). It's the least impressive buffet we've found in the Reno/Sparks area.

If you don't live in Northern Nevada, avoid the Rail City Players Club. Half of the staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgable. The others are poorly trained, and in more than a dozen trips to the Players Club counter we were routinely treated dismissively and rudely. Once we stepped away from the counter, and a patron they knew stepped up, they were all smiles. If you're not a local, expect indifferent service bordering on surly. Even the most innocuous question can get you a brusque brush-off.
