We ate at Toucan Charlie's on a Saturday night--steak and seafood night. The selection and quality of food was one of the best we've ever experienced at a buffet. There were a number of kinds of beef, including whole filets mignons, steaks, and excellent prime rib. Seafoods included dungeness and snow crab, prawns, shrimp, raw oysters, lox, white fish, salmon and a number of hot seafood dishes. There was an entire section of Mexican food that looked delicious...likewise an Asian counter. There were salads, cheeses, and way too many other foods to mention.
The restaurant's main competition is the Island Buffet at the Peppermill, which doesn't compare either in terms of quality or variety. In addition, the atmosphere is much nicer at Toucan Charlie's, as it's set up in sections that seem much calmer and more upscale than the totally open restaurant at the Peppermill. The only disappointment at Toucan Charlie's was the desserts. While there was a decent selection, the ones we tasted were pretty run-of-the mill. The cakes, especially, were a disappointment. Also, smaller portions or more mini-deserts would be appreciated so one could sample more of the selections.
