“Looks upscale...but lacks in some areas...esp the suites”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2011

We stayed in the newer tower...very nice decor...but it lacked outlets for charging phones and computers. They should consider putting power strips at the desk or dresser. The room was VERY HOT...could not get it to cool down quickly. A few things I think they should change...the shower, while large just didn't do it for me...not what you would expect in a suite...it was dual shower heads...but they were side by side. Also, the door to the comode opened in...if you wanted to close it, you had to straddle the toilet...same to get out. The spa tub was nice and relaxing, although a little loud...but having a tv in the bathroom was a nice touch. The housekeeping staff were very friendly...but the waitresses both resturuant and cocktail were rude. Asked a floor host for to send a cocktail waitress over and he rudely told us we'd just have to wait. Valet was quick and easy. All in all it was a nice trip...I would stay there again.

Thank you for becoming a member of Trip Advisor and for taking your time to send a review regarding your recent stay at the Peppermill. We do appreciate that you enjoyed your stay and gave us a 4 Star rating even though there were a few areas we did not meet your expectations.

We typically offer up to eight electrical plug-ins in each room. When this is not sufficient we encourage a phone call to the front desk and are happy to supply you with an extension cord with multiple plug-ins.

It is rare that we get a complaint on our spacious marble showers with the multiple shower heads. Our architects based this design upon research that showed this was the “rave” in modern showers. We do apologize that this was not enjoyable for you.

The door leading into the restroom opens inward in order to prevent it from conflicting with the shower door when it is open. We apologize that this was awkward for you but thanks for taking notice. There may be some opportunity to work on this design in the future.

The noise in the spa may just be the air being forced into water. This does create a rumbling sound but is not usually uncomfortable. We will send our engineers to check to make sure all of our spas are functioning normally. Thank you for the heads up.

It appears that our housekeeping staff and valet team showed you the 5 Star Service we train for everyday at the Peppermill. It is unfortunate that you did not receive this same level of service from all of our staff. We have noted these exceptions and will strive to maintain that high level of service that we have become known for.

Again we are happy to have been your first review with Trip Advisor and we do hope that we get an opportunity to have you as our guest in the future.

The peppermill is an awesome place to stay. Downtown Reno is not what it used to be. Full of crime and unclean. The peppermill is located on the south end of Reno away from the downtown area. The rooms and hotel are great as well as the casino.

Congratulations on becoming a member of Trip Advisor and for honoring the Peppermill with your first review! "Awesome" is a very descript word to define who we are and what we do here at the Peppermill.
We are very pleased that we inspired you to review us with such high recommendations. We hope to become your number one choice as we have with so many other visitors coming to Reno to play, party, gamble, or just to relax.

I try to bring the family with me whenever I'm traveling to the Reno/Tahoe area.
The skiing is some of the best around and we all have a great time.

Two words best describe the peppermill: "Mirrors" and "Neon".

It is very difficult to not get dizzy when you're walking through the casino floor there. There are mirrors on the walls, on the celing, and everywhere else you could possiby stick a mirror.

In front of every mirror, they feel compelled to place a blue or purple neon sign. The result can be nauseating if you focus on it.

The upside is the buffet. It is one of the best in Nevada with a particularly wonderful selection of seafood.

My theory is that they try to give you motion sickness with all the mirrors and neon so that you won't feel like eating as much by the time you get to the food.

The rooms were average; Nothing exceptionally good or bad.

Not much for the kids to do here, but Circus Circus is a short drive away.

I'd stay here again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back.

Thank you for writing a review on your stay here at the Peppermill in Reno. We are always happy when the mountains are full of snow (as this year) and skiers can come and stay with us and be up on the mountains in less than an hour to ski. It has been a good year so far!

The Peppermill has a unique style that you will always recognize whether it is in our Sparks property, Western Village Hotel and Casino, or in our three properties in Wendover, Nevada. This ambiance is designed to help our guests relax and "de-stress" when they are enjoying our amenities. We realize that different people have different preferences and we regret that this environment was not one of your favorites.

What you will notice is that in all of our recent expansions we have developed a Tuscan themed style that is very upscale in its design and is very elegant in its style. You will be seeing more of this design in the future so please continue being one of our valued guests and witness this with your own eyes. Thank you again.....hope to see you soon.

I had to travel to Reno on business. Up front, I'll tell you that I'm not really a gambler and the purpose was business, not party time.

Found the hotel on this site and was very happy. I stayed here on a Tuesday night and overall the hotel was pretty dead. I had a room in the Tuscany Tower, think I paid $99 for the night. There is a $10 fee over-and-above your rate which covers parking, internet, health club, etc. Net, $109 for a suite was an excellent rate.

Overview of Reno:
1. The physical area itself is beautiful as the Sierra Mountains are to the west and the desert is to the east.
2. 'Old Reno' (the part with the sign), is seedy. There is no way that I would have stayed down there. Most casino's are in this area, be careful.
3. The Peppermill is a couple of miles down Virginia Street from 'Old Reno.' The area around it is nice enough and we felt safe day or night in this area.

The Good:
1. Value
2. Service
3. Actually gambled a bit (Craps) and everything in the Casino was great; free drinks, nice pit bosses, etc.
4. Health Club was very nice with lots of cardio stuff along with machines and weights.

The Not So Good:
1. Food prices were high, $17 bucks for a veggie omlet (with hashbrowns & toast) and coffee.
2, The buffet wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. Menu stated Prawns and they were at best medium shrimp. The video on many of the TV's throughout the hotel made it appear that there was a heap of freshly cooked King Crab on a big mound of ice...nope, small crab, kind of funky looking in an oversized salad bowl. We actually ate lunch at the Atlantis Hotel and Casino buffet and it was significantly better than this one.

I don't have any plans to go back to Reno, but if I did I'd stay here again in a minute, however I would eat somewhere else.

Thank you for sending us such a well thought out review of your recent stay here at the Peppermill. We do appreciate that our guests find the beauty of the Reno area with the mountains on one side and the high Sierra desert on the other. It truly is a special destination.

You are absolutely right in that you will not find a more luxurious room for the price in all of Reno than in the all suite Tuscony Tower. We also appreciate that you had the opportunity to visit our well equipped fitness center and still had time to play a little craps in our player friendly casino. We hope you won a few dollars!

We pride ourselves in the food we serve in our award winning dining establishments and we certainly are disappointed that we did not meet your expectations in this area. With eight various choices for dining, we try very hard to price each one according to the appropriate menues and choices of entrees. Our very popular Coffee Shop serves a very affordable breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers a wide variety of discounts including: "Comfort Menu" offered Mondays through Fridays all day for $7 ($6 with a casino player's card), daily specials from 2pm to 5pm offering a variety of choices from our Asian Menu for $5.99, and of course we always give 10% off for seniors.

We are in the process of updating our buffet menus to more closely reflect our offerings in the buffet. The size of our shrimp and crab is somewhat affected by the season but we do want our guests to know that Reno is direct to the best seafood markets in the country and we provide a very high quality of seafood all year round.

We hope you return to the Peppermill in the near future and we certainly hope that your dining experiences will be on the level that we strive for everyday in all of our fine restaurants.

Reserved a room with two Queens a week in advance, and at check-in recieved a room with one king and the promise of a single rollaway which never arrived. We ended up with Two adults and Two children in one king bed. The managements reply was Oh Well we can not guarantee a room.

Thank you for sharing your comments with us on your stay here at the Peppermill. We truly regret that we did not live up to your expectations regarding the type of room you had requested. We make every effort to match room requests for every guest that visits our property. Occasionally we have a higher demand for certain room configurations causing this style of room to sell out more quickly than others. We do offer roll away beds when this occurs and we apologize for your bed not getting delivered to your room. We have addressed this omission with our hotel staff. We encourage all of our guests to please call our hotel front desk if there is anything missing in your room. Again, we apologize and we sincerely hope you will give us another chance in the future.

Big, beautiful and comfortable Tuscany room equipped with whirlpool tub, bathroom TV. The pools are outside so it is very cold to swim in but could be very nice in summer time. Nice remolded casino with good restaurants and bars.

Thank you for your very complimentary review regarding your stay in the Tuscony Tower at the Peppermill Resort. We love to spoil our guests with the luxurious suites in our newest tower. You mentioned our outdoor pools......even though Reno experiences lots of beautiful Sierra snow every winter, we keep one of our outdoor swimming pools open along with the hot tubs year round. We heat the pools with energy provided by our own geothermal plant. Once you're in the toasty water the experience is considered devine by most all of our winter season guests...especially the skiers! Once again, thank you for becoming a member of Trip Advisor and we hope to see you again at the Peppermill.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2010

There is good news at the end, let me stay right up front. So, my brother, who lives in Reno, was offered a locals-only deal on rooms. It was a great deal, by the way. He stayed in a smaller room in the old tower with his two kids, ages 10 and 13. That room had two Queen beds and though nice overall, it felt a bit cramped. The bathroom was small and the shower was a bath tub/shower combo. There was only room for one sitting chair in the room, other than sitting at the desk area. There was a safe in the room, and a big hi-def TV, but they had constant issues with the TV signal and we had issues watching movies with the kids in the rooms. They were fuzzy and the picture went in and out. To be fair, it there was a snowstorm going on, so that probably contributed. At check-in, though, we were informed there were issues with the Wi-Fi in the hotel, so our family options were dwindling. Eventually, we were able to get a signal now and then, but I found out later (after asking) that 500+ rooms had TV issues, so it seems that maybe the AV system might need to be reassessed at some point. For the kids, all they wanted was internet access for their Kindle's and iPod's and the ability to watch TV and movies. Peppemill, in my opinion, dropped the ball in this area. Other than that, for this Tower room (their standard rooms) the thing that bugged us most was that the Peppermill felt the need to put sensor-monitored 'mini-bar' items right out on a counter. Move an item, they warned, and you would be charged. I just think that is a horrible thing to do to guests (especially ones with kids). Mini-bar? hate it, and I give that 'zero stars.' Listen up, Peppermill - these type of things might be a revenue-generator for you, but it's a slap in the face to your guests. Also. just so every reader knows, you will be charged a Resort Service Fee for using internet and pool and all that. If that sounds confusing, it is. It's another bad business decision by the hotel management, though it seems all hotels we've stayed at in Reno do that. Nickel and dime stuff, in our opinion. Not necessary at all. We believe that fee is $11.30 per day, but the bill is confusing (another issue). I used to work a Front Desk years ago at a competitor of the Peppermill (The Atlantis Resort: Full Disclosure), and even I had some difficulty understanding the final hotel bill.

Now, my mother and I stayed in the Tuscany Tower, with two king-sized beds. That room was beautiful, large, and quite nice overall. We find very little to fault with this room. We had plenty of room to move about in, the bathroom was large and oversized (had a walk-in shower and separate jacuzzi!) and we just loved that room. I would liked to have seen a refrigerator in the room and that mini-bar gone forever, but the good outweighs the bad heavily with the Tuscany rooms. Two small issues: the TV was always hard to tell if it was on or not, and the toilet needed a bit of jiggling to get to work on our second day. So overall, no real complaints.

Now, about the restaurants and bars. Awesome, great food. Our experiences with everything from Saucy's Smokehouse to the Coffee Shop, to a family dinner at the higher-end Biscotti's was wonderful. Our Biscotti's waiter was one of the best we've ever had, and everything about that dinner was 'Five-Stars'! We would highly recommend that restaurant to everyone, and even the kids with their limited palate's enjoyed it. At night, I broke away and went to the Terrace Lounge and the staff there was amazing. Great people and they make me feel welcome. The gambling? Loose slots and we won overall. Dozens of difference poker machines and I always did well. I also played the $10 single-deck Blackjack tables at night and did well there, too, so I would give a good thumbs-up to the casino gambling. It was loud and noisy and colorful lights were everywhere, but that's a casino, right?

Lastly, let me say this: the night before we were to leave, as a family, we all sat down and spent probably 45 minutes carefully going over our menu choices for breakfast to be delivered in our Tuscany Tower room. The kids went over every item and we committed to having a great breakfast. It was something the kids were thrilled about and it was going to be our only in-room food experience. The card was filled out, and clearly it said place on your door handle by 2am, and your breakfast would be delivered the next morning. It allowed you to choose 15 minute delivery window, it would add an automatic gratuity, and everyone would be thrilled. Well, it never arrived since the card was still hanging on the door the next morning. To say my brother was miffed would be an understatement. He went to the front desk and had a pretty miserable experience with the clerk. This woman would not listen to him at all and wasn't interested in making us happy. She said he should talk to a manager later and offered him the main hotel manager's business card. And that was all. That was really, truly, a perfect example of nightmarish customer service. I had a conversation with the terrific Bell Captain, John Richmond, and he went out of his way to make sure I could talk with a manager in person. He was gracious and a good listener, and he got action for me. John Richmond, in my book, is the Bell Captain of the Year! He brought over Melinda Benum, the Hotel Shift Manager. I only hope if anyone ever has issues that are affecting your hotel stay at the Peppermill that you have the chance to have Melinda help you! Melinda ended up apologizing profusely for all of our troubles and especially for the room service snafu. She made a photocopy of that form and made me a promise to talk with Dan, whom I assume is in charge of the Room Service dept. She agreed with me that the form was confusing, and we were correct in the way we put the form out. She also asked to photocopy a copy of our bill from the coffee house that morning (our substitute breakfast) then she said she was 'comping' that charge. She gave us a credit for the full amount of the bill, minus the tip. We all thought that was an awfully nice gesture on her part. We didn't ask for that, we just wanted to be clear about the process. Regardless, that was classy on her part. As well, due to those problems with the picture on the TV in the other room, she gave us a credit for a movie that played poorly, and she even credited us for a movie that did play ok. Each of those movies cost $13.99 and she credited us the full amount. So, while we had some issues, Melinda Benum was the saving grace for us, and along with John Richmond, they represents the best faces of the Peppermill. Would I recommend this resort to friends and family east of the Mississippi? I would, but I would clearly tell them to be sure to understand that extra fees and resort charges will be added to their bills, and that some minor issues may pop up - but that with a little forgiving nature - they should have quite a nice time staying at the Peppermill Resort. Can some things be improved? Most certainly. Were we content with how management handled our problems? For the most part, yes, after we had to invest some time and energy in lodging complaints. So, while I would like to say Five Star overall, I'm giving 3 stars to our family stay at the Peppermill.

Thank you for your comments regarding your stay with us at the Peppermill in Reno. We appreciate that you included the positive experiences you had along with the unpleasant ones.

First we'd like to say that we are very pleased that our Hotel Shift Manager and our Bell Captain took your complaints very seriously and took the appropriate steps necessary to remedy them to the best of their abilities. We have passed on to them our appreciation of doing what is right.

We have addressed what appears to be the worst calamity of your stay....that of our Room Service staff missing your order. This was a major fault on our part and we have re-addressed training with our room service staff that were responsible for this error.

We encourage guests with children that do not wish to partake of our mini-bar offerings to ask for the mini-bar to be locked. Also, if there are any discrepancies regarding snack items on the counter, we will gladly review your bill and insure that you are not being charged for any items that are not missing. You're right, this is not a perfect system but our guests that enjoy these items do appreciate having them available.

Again, thank you for taking your time to address the problems that occurred on your stay with us. We continually strive to make every stay a positive experience for our guests and we sincerely hope we get the chance to give you a problem free experience in the future.
