There were several shops along the river walk, though not much river. It would have been nice to visit the shops but most were closed Sunday.

I like the fact there is a nicely paved and maintained River Walk. People don't want to solely gamble when visiting Reno ~ getting fresh air is nice after inhaling smokey air in casinos! There of course is the typical mix of people who frequent the River Walk (ie walkers, joggers and perhaps homeless, etc), but my friend and I felt completely safe walking the entire way back and forth. Nice to have a bridge to cross over to other side of river too. The City has done a nice job creating this pleasurable area. However, don't expect "cute little shops" all along the River Walk, even if you are told by many locals they are there. I don't think the people of Reno realize what cute little shops really mean. There was a photographers studio, a hair "salon", a tiny art store....we kept expecting to come upon door after door of cute little shops. Obviously never happened. But for a stroll and then maybe a stop at one of the eateries for a drink afterwards, it is an A-1.

This area was updated a few years back so the river can accommodate kayakers and swimmers. The river is fun to get into during the summer time and there are always people in the river, having picnics, or enjoying the surrounding restaurants, coffee shops, and bars. Many people will go floating down the river and end their trip at the river walk. The area has an artsy feel to it, with murals on the sides of buildings and many arttistic events going on during the summer months. The most notable is Artown, which is a month full of different art related events. Every day and night in July at the riverwalk there are performances, classes, concerts, and food stalls. Other big events happen throughout the summer here as well, like Gay Pride and kayaking festivals.
I personally enjoy walking around the area at night, although it is important to be aware of your surroundings when you do so. It is absolutely beeautiful at night, but downtown Reno is just like amyn other larger citie's downtowns. There are homeless people near or in the riverwalk. Bars are near by so there are the occasional drunk people walking around. But the view of the river at night is stunnign and worth the extra caution.
