“Bucket List Tick”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2013

If you want to go out into real desert from Las Vegas for the day then this is a fun trip out. If you aim to go as far as Rachel, Nevada and then back then it is a 151 mile drive from the centre of Vegas to Rachel. We had our own hire car and found it a very easy drive - easily done in c two and half hours.

It is important that you stop at one of the gas stations in Alamo to top up as there is nothing beyond there and it is wise to have a full tank.

You turn off onto Highway 375 at Crystal Springs. The sign is immediately at the junction if you want to stop and take pictures. Shortly afterwards you pass the Alien Research centre with its giant statue but we did not stop.

After you have gone over the first summit and between Mile markers 30 and 29 you get to Mail Box Road with the black mailbox (now white). We took our photos and were then entertained by someone driving up and emptying the said mailbox.

We moved onto Rachel and had lunch in the Little Ale'inn and then drove down the back road to the gate into Area 51. The people in the restaurant will give you directions. As long as you do not touch any part of the gate or the fence the guards will ignore you - just do not try to take their photograph as they do object to that.

On the way back to Vegas we stopped at the Pahranagat nature reserve which has a beautiful lake.

“Great scenery, great drive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2013

It's open cattle range and there are wild horses as well, so be on the look out. The whole Area 51 thing is a hoot and there are lots of fascinating people who travel this road.

Get gas before you head out, as there are no services available. There is one "motel"/bar/restaurant (Little A'Le"Inn) which is pretty much a dump, but can provide some entertainment.

“The scenery is worth the drive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2013

We had fun going on the highway and jumping out to get pics by the signs but other than that, it is a nice road to travel. Very light traffic and some wild horses running around. We brought this out of Vegas heading back towards Yosemite. It added a little bit of time and it was worth it. The guys had a ball. So, I would recommend seeing if it fits into your schedule and give it a try if possible.

“Perfect weather, perfect views, but no aliens”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

First off, definitely start off in the morning if visiting during the warm weather. We drove the entire distance from Las Vegas with the top down and enjoyed every minute. There are gas stations outside of Las Vegas so don't panic, including a retro Sinclair with the dinosaur. The views and solitude (so quiet on a Monday) are just the best! Many photo opportunities await and we recommend getting that first photo of the ET highway sign right when you turn off onto 375. Don't wait because the other sign is vandalized real bad, just like the famous mailbox. Stopping for lunch in Rachel is a must (see our review of the Little A'Le'Inn if you like). A great day to chill out and think of the possibilities out there. It must be really a treat to experience this road at night as well. If into something unusual, we highly recommend. If you don't 'get it', it's just another desert road. Don't expect to see anything 'alien'. We didn't even see a low flying jet all day. Have fun!!

“a road is a road - unless you actually see something”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2013

the only reason we came on this road was because of the ET theme and it was a one off thing whilst on vacation.

Nothing and nobody seen until we were back on the road from the air base and a car followed us to a local shop, asked a question which he would have known the answer to and then drove off again - coincidence???
