“Nice People And A Nice Hotel”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

Was on a trip throughout Nevada and decided to stop in Pioche and stayed at the Overland Hotel. The people and the guestes (mostly locals) are really nice, the hotelrooms are huge, clean and cheap and it is definitely a place, where I would stay again. Although, I will probably be never in that area again.

Pioche has a rich history, and the Overland exudes much of the character from days gone by. We spent two nights at $71/night for two in The Fishing Lodge (Room 15). Huge, comfortable mini-suite with a large bathroom and nicely decorated. During the week workers from out of town stay there, but many head home on the weekends.

The bar downstairs is a gathering place for the friendly locals and folks from nearby towns. The Silver Diner is across the street and open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (Hours vary.) A small market is just a few steps away.

The Overland is a good base for anyone exploring this big country and great value.

The hotel had been recently renovated. Each room has a different theme and we stayed in the Garden Room. It was charming and cozy and maybe a little girly for two women of a certain age. Be forwarned that the motel was built quite a while ago and the stairs from the lobby to the rooms are VERY steep. The hotel has somewhat of a reputation for paranormal or at least unexplainable events. We saw some weird lights in the hallway and our photos had abnormal shadows in spots.

Room Tip: If you are interested in the paranormal, we got goosebumps just standing outside the door to room 10...

Just spent 4 nights at the Overland. Overall, I'd say it was a decent place at a good price.
In the past I'd stayed in the cabins at Tilly's, but they were booked, so I ended up at the Overland. Good rate, and clean rooms. We were in room 23(?) "the Bears Den." My wife commented that there was more fishing stuff than bear stuff "decorating" the room, and the mounted plush bear head was kinda silly, but still an acceptable room. One of the drawers in the antique bureau was missing the back, and the water pressure/temperature seemed to fluctuate A LOT the first night, but wasn't too bad after that.
It is an old place so the stairs are steep, and the room was dated, but definitely functional. Mattress was VERY firm. I am used to my memory foam at home, so it took some getting used to, but after a couple days of hunting, it wasn't hard to fall asleep anywhere. Plus, by the time I'd start to get sore, it was 0 dark thirty, and time to get up anyway.
The bartenders downstairs were inconsistent in the way they billed the room. The first said just pay 2 nights at a time, then 2 days later different one said pay the rest of the reservation (originally 6 days) and they'd refund if we decided to leave early. Well, we did end up leaving early and they had to credit my card back, but not a big deal.
While the cabins at Tilly's are newer, larger and nicer (also more expensive), if they are full I'd have no problem staying at the Overland again.

Pioche has an interesting history that makes this little town worth a visit. The Overland Hotel and Saloon makes an overnight visit essential! Our room was huge, beautifully decorated with all kinds of high-quality Native American artwork; everything was spotless, the towels were luscious (and I don’t normally notice things like that!), the bed was very comfortable and we could have thrown a very large party in our room! The saloon downstairs was great; a long, long old-fashioned bar, lots of interesting items on the walls, and great beer. Someone called Troy was having his birthday party the evening we stayed but we didn’t hear a thing; this is a very solid building. Breakfast and dinner can be had in The Silver Place just across the street; simple, plain but decent food and very reasonable prices.

There are not a lot of hotel options in this area of Nevada. There is not a better clean option in the area. If you want something cheaper, check out the town of Caliente which is 20 miles south. The Overton has a strong odor of cigarette smoke.

The Overland Hotel and Saloon is located in downtown Pioche across the street from the small town’s grocery store (closes at 6pm) and restaurant (closes about 8pm), and a block away the only convenience store. Many of the historic sites (Million Dollar Courthouse and Thompson’s Opera House) are a short-walk from the hotel. Hotel check-in is located in the saloon. All guest rooms are located on the second floor and I stayed in the Bear’s Den (room 23) above the saloon. I didn’t experience any noise from the saloon. The large room was uniquely decorated and some of the furniture appeared a bit dated, but featured satellite TV, refrigerator, and microwave. The room was clean and comfortable. Pioche is an interesting town with its mining history on display and the Overland Hotel was the perfect location experience part of that history. If the place is haunted, I slept through it. Neat place!
