During the First week of May 2013 I stayed at La Isla with my family for four days. The place is an easy 3-4 hour drive from Quito and easily accessible by vehicle on dirt track and across a tantalizing suspension bridge. The venue is beautifully green and lush. There are plenty of foot paths whereby one can explore the land and dip in various rivers. Best of all, the hospitality of the honors Dr Marco Rojas and is wife Monica is warm and generous. The accommodations are rustic but comfortable. I would suggest you bring a mosquito net and repellent (mosquitoes and black flies enjoy the tropics as much as we do) to have a better night's sleep. The food is basic but good (ask for reduced salt if you are hypertensive or want to avoid becoming one).

We wandered into this little gem one late Sunday rainy night after a long drive from Canoa.

We looked at a hotel close by on the main road but it was scary and I wanted to wake up in the jungle not on a busy muddy road with trucks rolling by all night long. We saw the sign for La Isla Hosteria and followed more small signs down a long dirt road, we almost gave up but kept going and came to a small suspension bridge going across a small river.

We crossed by foot as our driver was scared of driving across. We walked up to the outside restaurant and was greeted by a young lady who was happy to help us but wanted us to know it was an Eco lodge and not a star rated hotel. She was very frank about this and wanted to make sure we understood. The rooms are very basic, and she had the floor moped as we gathered our luggage, no mosquitos, but lots of other critters around, so maybe a little bug juice for a long stay would work if that sort of thing bothers you.

The grounds are beautiful, Wow. Our host was very sweet and helpful, she had us go and gather fruit with her on the property. She was very accommodating with meals and whatever we asked of her and her staff. She spoke Spanish only.

I would give this place an A for the surroundings, and the efforts of the staff. The rooms were lacking the detail that would push them to a higher rating, very basic, almost like church camp or camp style. very pretty on the outside. No hot water.
