“Best "old Las Vegas" hotel”
Reviewed March 16, 2014

If you are looking for an "old Las Vegas" downtown hotel, this is truly your best choice. Spend the extra for the Rush Tower. It is non smoking and hands down well worth the price. The junior suites are also well worth the extra $$.

Once again we had a nice 5 day stay at the Golden Nugget (8-13 Mar). The location is perfect for downtown and the value (for the time of the year) was good. Check in went well with average customer service provided. This time we were in the Carson Tower, which are nice but average styled rooms. We have also stayed in the newer Rush Tower and the rooms there are much more modern and better appointed. We had booked a king NS room, but for the first and most expensive evening (Sat) they only had doubles available. Not a big deal but it meant a room move, which was accommodated the next day with no fuss by check in staff. The room was large, very clean and everything was serviceable. It was very quiet too but then it was at the end of a hallway. The South Carson Tower does offer the quietest rooms. The window was small and didn't allow in much light which made the room seem dingy most of the time, even with the drapes pulled wide apart. The view from the sixth floor was nothing special, but then it 's a downtown location and we weren't expecting too much. The decor and style is dated and is need of an update. The bed was comfy but way too soft for our liking and after a couple days we could feel it in our backs. Lots of big comfy pillows. There was a room safe but it's very small. Our biggest complaint with the room was the lack of clean-up one day. Not typically a big deal for us but we needed towels and garbage was overflowing. Mind you, they were quick bringing towels when we called.

The casino is smaller than those on the strip but it is probably the nicest one downtown. We did not eat in any of the restaurants having been there before. The pool area is small and gets crowded but is enclosed and therefore stays relatively warm through the day (temps were in 70's while we were there). The fish tanks at the pool and bar are stunning and beautiful. The service throughout the resort was average at best. This is something the hotel/resort should really work on as it can make a big difference on people returning and recommending it.

We would recommend the GN based mainly on location, cleanliness and value. Our stay was enjoyable and we would consider staying again in the future.

Room Tip: Consider an upgrade to the Rush Tower. Newer, more modern and well appointed rooms.

We returned to the Golden Nugget after our great experience last year. The VIP room had many advantages. There is a special VIP lounge for check in and any questions you may have. The VIP rooms are on the 16th and 17th floors of the Gold Tower. The room was spacious with a couch and a small recliner. It included free Wifi, free use of the exercise facilites. There was complimentary coffee, fruit, bottled water and nuts and candy by the elevator. We enjoyed the cd's in the room.
The mirror in the bathroom is abut 8 feet long with a frame of lights around it The center of the mirror is a second television. There was a vanity chair in the bathroom with a lighted make up mirror on the counter.
Since our last stay we have received great email offers to return.

From arrival to departure it was a wonderful experience - The service, starting with the night desk clerk (who I cannot remember and should kick myself) who fixed our messed up reservation. We had gone through Expedia to reserve two rooms from Monday through Friday. We got there and Expedia had reserved one room for the days but had the other one checking out on Thursday. She apologized for the problems and said she would upgrade us for the problem. It was wonderful. The pool was great, the restaurants were great, and, again, the service was superior to anything that we have had in Las Vegas before. The maid service was exceptional and fulfilled our every request.

The location on Fremont Street makes it all worthwhile. There was entertainment every night and it was all good entertainment!. The selection of shows, food, and gambling was all a short walk down the street. We went out to the strip to see one of the big name shows and we were so happy going back downtown.

We will definitely stay there the next trip to Vegas!

First off, the Golden Nugget is not on the strip as you may know it today. It's at the very end in the old section. I believe they are trying to regentrify it. Stayed at the new non-smoking Rush Tower on the 22nd floor. The 22nd and 23rd floor are the Gold Club Rooms that have VIP checkin, free snacks, coffee and water as you get off the elevator, free internet, free use spa/gym. Rooms are nice and clean. The bed is comfy. Our view was not good. It overlooked the top of some old buildings and the Freemont Street installation that has non-stop music, literally, until 2am. It was super loud even though we were on a high floor. The hotel pool is kinda small and crowded. It's ok. We ate in the Italian restaurant in the hotel. I think there are 4 or 5 hotels on the property. It was pretty good, but expensive. It's not a huge casino which I find nice. All in all, I probably wouldn't stay again as I think you can get a room for a similar rate in a better part of town.

Room Tip: Don't stay on the side facing Freemont Street.

Only been to Las Vegas twice but stayed here three times. Stayed our first night last year and after hotel hopping and sightseeing stay another! So this year we came back for two more!! Love it and will absolutely stay again!! Best value! Wish we had stayed all 5 nights and traveled to the strip. That is what we will do next time!

The hotel had a kind of resort feeling to it and I got a good vibe when I walked through the doors.
Check in was ok but I wasn't made to feel really welcome and the staff were not knowledgable about restaurant times nor did they offer to help with a reservation (so we ate elsewhere). I asked about a coupon book I was promised when I booked and was told my reservation didn't include it.
The room itself was pretty good and it was far enough back not to be disturbed too much from the FSE.
Upon checkout the bill was higher than the rate I booked (paid in full at time of booking). I questioned this but was told only a manager could sort it. So I then waited for a manager. At first they said there was nothing I could do and I would be charged the difference between the rate I paid and the higher rate. After telling them I would be contacting my credit card company and telling them not to authorise the payment. She disappeared and 20 minutes later told me that the extra charge was because of additional people in the room. I said this was rubbish as there were only 2 of us in the room, we had 2 bed and only 2 keys. She said she would remove the charge. No apology.
The Golden Nugget needs to be very careful. Customers are looking for more than just a good hotel- and they can get that on the strip. Other properties downtown are becoming personable and going above and beyond with customer service and will surely be stealing Golden Nugget's customers.
