When in Vegas or any other neighboring city, the Hoover Dam is well worth the trip. About an hour drive from Vegas, the road winds through the desert, small towns and Boulder City. I don't believe you can stop on the bypass. There is parking next to the bypass and you can then walk across the bypass. On windy days, it's a bit of a challenge.

The Hoover Dam itself is the main attraction. The bypass offers a spectacular view of the Dam.

When visiting the dam, it is worth the cost to take a tour inside the Dam. The tours are informative. There is a basic tour which lasts about an hour and a more extensive tour which lasts a couple of hours. After the tours, you are free to walk across the Dam from one end to the other. Arizona to Nevada.

I would suggest bringing your own food. The choices are limited and resemble the food sold at 7-11 and it is very expensive for what you are getting. They are 2 gift shops. The first is pricey and filled with the same, familiar gift shop stuff. The second shop has food and a few small gift items, which are nearly half the price of the "main" gift shop. So, check both locations before you buy something.

This is worth a trip to see.

An easy drive from Las Vegas is The Hoover Dam is well worth the visit. It costs $7 to park and $11 for the short tour to the power station. With the tour you with a short film of the building of the dam, then enter a lift and drop 500 feet to see the massive steel pipes that feed the power station. You then walk along a well lit tunnel to the power station itself, or at least half of it. this is followed by a return in the lift where there is a room full of informative displays and dioramas where you do a self tour. I got a lot out of the tour and thought it fair value.
The dam is spectacular and you can appreciate what a mammoth engineering feat it was. If it had never been built the area it serves would be vastly different today as the dam supplies not only water but electricity. There is a more comprehensive.$30 tour but we did not go on it.
We spent nearly 2 hours at the dam site and any less would be a rush. My wife said the first set of toilets after the car park were WET or flooded, she was unimpressed. It may have been bad timing. I used the male toilets inside the visitors centre and they were modern and clean.

The dam itself is incredible. The views are breathtaking, and by being there you really start to appreciate all the risks its builders took. We drove around first, getting out to take lots of photos along the way. Parking was $7, and once we had parked, we discovered that the only thing left to do was the visitor's center ($8) or a tour ($30). It was also hot as blazes, so it was frustrating to have not known these costs from the beginning - I don't mind paying to support our parks, but I do like a heads-up. If you go, take lots of water.

We saw the Hoover Dam as part of a days sightseeing trip with Heli Usa. We stopped in the car park and walked up to the bridge. The view of the dam from the bridge is brilliant. We would have liked to be there longer and go in to their visitor centre and we will probably return to do this another day. You cannot appreciate the size of the dam until you have stood on the bridge and seen how small the cars are that are parked down the bottom. Also can now appreciate the risks that stunt men take making James Bond films, abseiling down the dam must have been something else. Make sure you have your camera at the ready and if you have a zoom lens now is the time to use it. (There are toilets in the car park if you feel the need to use them but they are not the best and some of our party decided they would rather not)

Nicely done. We rented a car in Vegas then drove to the hoover Dam. The parking was 7 dollars then you can walk around and take all the pictures you like. Nice place to take pictures, also very nice statues.
