My wife and I have been to Red Rock Canyon 3 times previously. We have done some hikes there already but I thought it might be nice to have an actual guide give us some info on the area this time.
Tom showed up in his Mercedes van on time at the Paris hotel with clipboards in hand. After signing releases and introductions he had us get in. We had a full group but there was plenty of space in the vehicle and it was very comfortable. We then drove out to RRC (about 25 minutes).
He brought us to the third or fourth stop along the RRC road and then asked what the group was up for (challenge wise) for today. At that moment it started pouring. It was like walking into a shower pouring.
Tom produced some plastic ponchos for everyone - but himself. He didn't want one. So off we go, skirting puddles and seeking shelter under rock outcroppings. About 10 minutes later the rain stopped and we were treated with some amazing scenes of mini-waterfalls appearing over many of the rock formations. This was really neat and something I had never seen before.
We even watched a few mini-washes form up and run down some paths.
Tom took us to a good location where he offered some snacks and water, then suggested multiple places we could explore on our own. There was somewhere for everyone to go and I think everyone enjoyed the freedom to look around. I asked Tom some questions about RRC that I had been curious about during my previous trips there. He knew the answers and was excited to have someone interested in the history of the area.
We then walked back to the vehicle a different way and he told us about weddings that had been done there, stuff like that.
My only disappointment is there were no other stops. But in 3 hours (inc about 1 hour of travel) there is only so much you can really do. He did tell us some of his hiking stories (12 hour trips) on some of the trails we drove by.
Tom is a character - he is entertaining in a very earnest way. He is very approachable and his point of view is interesting to hear. I think it is safe to say he loves what he does and that shows through in his presentations.
After coming to Vegas many times I can say that this is one of the best values you can get if you want off the strip. This is a much better option than renting a car and doing it on your own if you are looking for just a small taste of RRC. I just wish there was a longer tour option!
