For a "newbie" to Las Vegas, I turned to other reviews on Tripadvisor to know what to expect for staying at the Stratosphere. We chose that location as the conference my husband was attending was located in the Tower. I saw the range of opinions and figured that I would see aspects of both the positive and negative reviews. That prediction came true, but my bottom line thought about this hotel: as long as you know what to expect, you will not be disappointed. Here are some general comments:
Location: Yes, it is at the far end of the Strip, so one must plan accordingly. While my husband was at the conference, I stayed in the hotel for the morning, not quite ready to venture out, but when I realized I would have better lunch options, I walked about 30 minutes to the Fashion Show, where I enjoyed a wonderful turkey sandwich at the Mustard Cafe. I crossed the street and walked through the Palazzo and the Wynn just to see other resort/casinos, and then walked back. I felt quite safe. For the weekend, we did use the bus to reach the Aria, where we saw Zarkana; however, it did take awhile to board a bus as it was quite full on its way south. However, on the second bus we were able to sit down though not together. However, a nice young man from Chile provided for good conversation as the bus stopped and started its way.
Room: A number of reviews include the question about coffee makers. Our room did not have a coffee maker, but not a big deal for us. The room was clean, the beds comfortable. My only complaint: a remote that could have used some cleaning. There was typically hotel noise (my husband heard the more interesting sounds the first night as I slept pretty soundly), but after hours of walking around a very noisy city (both inside and outside), the room itself was quiet. Surprisingly, we never turned on the A/C.
Food: We did eat twice and Rocky's Diner, and enjoyed both our meals (one eaten at 1:30 in the morning as we had arrived late from our plane trip). There's a Starbucks in the lobby. For dinner the first night, we ate at El Segundo de Sol, which was at the Fashion Show--incredible salsa but the music was a bit loud.
Would I choose the Strat again? Maybe, but it would be nice if I ever were to return to Vegas to be "closer" to the center area of the Strip. But for this weekend, it worked just fine.
