“Old School aways better”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

This past January made reservations at this old school spot.Stayed 7 days in the tower.Played poker in their small, limit only poker nitch. Not large enough to be called a room.Well run with a very veteran group of players.Very enjoyable.Easy access to Fremont St.,other poker rooms and public transportation to anywhere in Vegas. In the past the place was too smokey for me,this has markedly decreased.Subway and other resturants on site. All good.It has a dated atmosphere, but thats part of its' Vegas of the past charm. You could almost feel Bugsy grinning at you.

Room Tip: go for the tower.excellent security

I stay at the El Cortez every September-last 5 years. I notice most people pick it because of the price, and they are correct. The Vintage rooms are very good for the price and one floor above the casino, but quite. I personally like the fact that when I'm in the sportsbook or playing blackjack I just turn around and walk up the stairs to my room.(no evevator to vintage rooms). Don't know about the Tower rooms, but my 2 buddies that go with me every year each get a Cabana suite(new). They are GREAT and nowhere downtown(or the strip for that matter) are you going to get a Jr. or Super suite for the price.Great for couples! The hotel is older, but they do a deceant job of up-dating also smaller and fewer tables than most downtown casinos but just down Fremont street is ton of larger and very nice casinos.Great for people watching.
They opened a new restaurant, the Flame. I was surprised that a dinning room with the fabulous food and service would be in this moderate to above moderate hotel. This retstaurant is excellant fine dinning. The creme' brulee desert to die for.
All and all the ElCortez is the best bang for the buck. Downtown is really getting to be the place to stay lately, Good varitey of restaurants, casinos, attrications and all within 5 blocks-and not like those killer walking blocks out no the strip.
The people working there are very nice. And one thing that you don't get in the other hotels & casinos it that upper management people are alway avilable and their offfices are close and on the 1st. floor. They have been there for years, and usually any problem is immediately corrected by them.
The Elvis singer in the new lounge is great. And if you are a real gambler and can't get away from those slots-they will wheel your dinner out to you where you are playing.

I picked this hotel off a booking website simply because it was about the cheapest place I could find on a Friday night. Check in was not as smooth as it could be, but that was because the booking website failed to communicate my booking to the hotel: when they saw my confirmation, they sorted me out a room quick smart.

I was a wee bit worried when I saw a vintage room was just above the gambling area on the second floor, but apart from traces of the music I didn't hear a thing (not until the Martin Luther King parade the next morning, which I could watch from my room). The room itself was a bit dated, but clean. I didn't want to pay $12 for the internet, but from my window noticed a cool looking coffee shop across the road - it became my regular for the five days I was in Vegas, and they had free wifi.

After exploring the Strip and driving around a bit, I was actually happy to be staying in downtown: it suited my temperament better.

With no reasonably priced rooms available on the strip during President Day Weekend, having enjoyed playing in their casino over many trips to Las Vegas, we decided to stay at El Cortez Hotel. In booking the room I knew we would be staying in one of “The Vintage Rooms” which is in the older section of the hotel.

While the room was adequate and we actually appreciated not having a true window to let daylight in after a long nights out in Las Vegas, I was disappointed to discover layers of dirt on the bathroom vent fan and lamps. Dirt that seemed to have been there from when “Bugsy Siegal” owned the joint.

For me, seeing this tells me the maids or housekeeping staff cuts corners or do not take pride in their work. Both of these things do not speak well for a hotel that claims itself as “Downtown Las Vegas Premier Hotel”.

My second disappointment with El Cortez hotel was the $12 per day charge for internet service. When most people pay $30-40 per month at home for this same service, $12 per day is ridiculous.

On the bright side there are no resort fees at El Cortez which unfortunately seems to be the norm in most Las Vegas hotels nowadays. The hotel's free parking is nice as it has easy access to the hotel and the casino. Also, El Cortez does offer an airport shuttle which I am not sure if it is complimentary.

I did find most employees and the front desk staff to be friendly along with the valet staff who were very helpful with local driving directions.

Even with my disappointments I would still recommend El Cortez for an affordable budget stay in Las Vegas. After all, in my opinion being in Las Vegas is not really about spending time in your room.

It is possible the rooms in the newer portion of the hotel maybe a lot nicer than the ones in “The Vintage” section and worth the extra money. However, to save a few bucks to donate in the casino, I guess a little “Bugsy” dust ain't never hurt or kill nobody.

Room Tip: Newer rooms maybe worth extra few dollars than "The Vintage" ones.

I was apprehensive about this hotel at first but I have to say that I could find nothing negative to say about our stay. The hotel staff was friendly and genuinely seemed to want to make our stay enjoyable. Our room was to be 1 queen bed but we were given a king bed in the tower area at no extra cost. The hotel is older but the room was quite spacious. The toilet/shower were enclosed by their own door while the vanity right outside that door allows one to get ready while another is using the shower. We were on the 12th floor and never heard a sound from any other rooms. There was a complimentary shuttle to the airport. The cafe food was very good and the prices were very reasonable. The cafe there also has a special going on 24/7 of a hamburger, chips and beer (or soda) for $5 and let me tell you this was a delicious hamburger. It came with all the trimmings on the side, including 2 thick slices of tomato, a nice garnishment of lettuce, 4 pickles, a small container of mayo and, of course k & m. The chips were not the small bag either, but the large 2-person size. The slots and other forms of gambling here have been rated the very highest in Vegas for most of the last several years and although I am not much of a gambler I did very well here. Wi-fi is not free at this hotel but then neither is it at most other hotels. However, the front desk did print out our boarding passes for us at no charge. The location is only 1 1/2 blocks from the Freemont Street Experience and the bus (Deuce) that will take you to the end of the stip and back and anywhere along the way for $8 for a 24 hour pass. Although this hotel is located downtown and there are some who might consider it a "bad" area I never felt unsafe walking alone there. There were always people around and open businesses. I would definitely stay here again in the future.

I read an article in Sunset magazine about the revitalization of the downtown area and this hotel was mentioned so I decided to try it. The El Cortez is an older establishment that has stood the test of time. Its walls are lined with old Vegas photos and were a historical delight. I even had one of the security guards explain some of them to me. The hotel has 2 areas, the main part and the cabanas across the street. We stayed in the Main part - tower- because I wanted a king sized bed. The room was very nice. Very large. Included a safe large enough for a laptop. The bed was not the most comfortable but it was a quiet room. The fitness center is located across the street in the cabanas. They definitely have a contemporary look but I understand they only have queen sized beds. Next time I stay here, I will try these rooms as the more modern look was appealing. The casino was nice. Looser slots. Nice bar. The front desk folks were very helpful and it is only 2 blocks from the fremont district. There is a small, well lit park to stroll thru before getting to the Fremont Experience or you can walk to the corner and cross the main street. I felt totally safe in this area. The drawback to this hotel is no pool. So it depends on what time of year you visit and if this is important to you. The price is right to stay here. We got the breaksfast special, which gave us a $15.00 voucher per day off a meal. It was a bargain. I have stayed on the Fremont at another well know hotel and dollar for dollar, this is a better choice. The crowd were a mix of ages but mostly mid to older folks. Who cares though, when you're in Vegas you are there to have fun. Enjoy

Room Tip: For a more modern facility stay at the cabanas. For an older style room, stay in the Towers.

Let's face it! We stayed here becuase it was cheap. We were not expecting anything spectacular but we would never stay here again. The noise from fremont cannoot be blocked out. The casino staff seemed tired and unpolished. The cluientele was a little scary and you might as well put a concrete slab on the bed very uncomfortable. Hidden charges like 12 buicks for wireless internet and I accidently pushed sertvice ewhich they could not give our money back. There is a 50 dallar deposit in addition to the room charge to stay in room that is added cost. And wuill not be refunded until up to a week after the stay. I would have rather spent a few more dollars for some quieet and nicer bed and sleep.
