When the hype and excess of Vegas starts to wear, this scenic area helps restore balance. Just a short drive from the strip and easy to find. Although there are trails, the area can be enjoyed completely from your car, a bonus in the summer extreme heat. Although we thoroughly enjoyed Red Rock, if you have time for only 1 excursion, we thought Valley of Fire was a little more impressive (perhaps because we saw it first); however it is further and takes more time to see--probably most of a morning compared to 2 hours for Red Rock.

When people think of Las Vegas, rarely do they think of the nearby natural wonders. One such place, located in the mountains on the West side of the Las Vegas Valley, is the Red Rock National Conservation Area. This little gem is a micro-ecosystem quite different from that experienced in the valley below. It receives more moisture and has a cooler climate, thus the vegetation and animal life are different. This phenomenon is explained more fully in the excellent Park Service Visitor Center displays, in themselves worthy of the trip. The soaring sandstone cliffs surrounding the Center are spectacular. One needs an auto to get there, but the trip is worthwhile.

Nice place to explore. The amphitheater will close early on some days, for shows. They had said it closed at 3 on Saturday. I arrived at 2:40 and they wouldn't let me in.
