Right outside was an Elvis impersonator doing his best and helped me pretend/critique my esteem for the King. Although it was August and quite hot still at night, most of the bars along the way had people misters that took the worst of the heat off. The Light Show was spectacular.

From dusk till midnight, on the hour, Fremont Street puts on a spectacular light show. Known as 'downtown' or 'the old strip', it's a pedestrian mall with constant entertainment. We encountered busking musicians, jugglers and local characters, along with an awesome 5 piece band putting on cool sounds. We had more fun that night on Fremont than the other nights on the strip!

Everyone should visit Freemont street. Take the bus (save your feet). Go after dark when its 'more colorful' but leave the kids if you don't want to have to explain, because there are some very interesting people roaming around. One particular Captain Jack Sparrows accompanied by pirate wench with size Gs and only pasties covering (see what I mean). Free music, the overhead projector is AWESOME. Don't gamble much but chose to do it here and had a great time at the Golden Nugget blackjack table due to great table mates and a helpful dealer. I won enough to pay for my hotel and airfare! Taking the suggestion of a friend, we played Cinderella and got out around midnight as we were told it gets even weirder down there after then. A terrific last night experience for our trip in Vegas

Many tourists confuse "Downtown" with the "Strip." The Strip is essentially a five-mile segment of Las Vegas Boulevard with hotels, volcanos, malls, Eiffel Towers, etc. on both sides of the street. Downtown is essentially five blocks of Fremont Street, closed to traffic and under a canopy. It resembles a year-round street fair with electronic displays overhead and fun activities on the ground. At the top of Fremont Street is the Plaza Hotel (former site of the Union Plaza train depot)
with a restaurant owned by former mob attorney and former mayor Oscar Goodman. It overlooks the entire 5 blocks of the Fremont Street Experience. Locals say the slots are looser and the people are friendlier Downtown, and the pawn shop featured on Pawn Stars is right around the corner on Las Vegas Boulevard.

If you want to see something different than the mega resorts of Vegas with a touch of grime on the side this is the place. Pretty entertaining to walk around take in the sights and sounds. People are just hilarious there. Has a bit of a circus atmosphere. Great to visit but not to stay if you like new Vegas.
