Great informal rustic atmosphere place frequented by locals, serving large portions of solid home cooking [chili, big salads, meat loaf - which was delicious] and it won't break the bank. Friendly prompt service too.

What a pleasant surprise we stumbled upon while at a workshop at a nearby hotel. News traveled fast: we were but the first of many workshop attendees that chose this eatery over all others. The food was excellent and the proportions more than anticipated. Costs were very reasonable and the service was great. If you are in the area, hungry for some “home cooked” food, this is the place to go. Try their trout or salmon, chili, steaks, burgers (beef or chicken) and homemade meatloaf; you won’t be disappointed. Your meal can be topped off with apple cobler or berry pie but you must leave enough room as a scoup of ice cream on the pie is worthy of the "home cooked" label.

Reminds me of my childhood at a local restaurant. People are nice, food is down home good, and the cornbread is to die for.

Austin's was recommended to us by several different locals around town, and the votes seemed unanimous--get the hamburger and mushrooms. First impression was entirely pleasant--log cabin decor fits the casual Lake Tahoe vibe perfectly. The ginormous Apple Pie under glass at the front door was so SO tempting. Service was first rate ... and then this imaginative menu arrives to turn things up a notch!

Wow. An entire page of salads, and they turned out to be as good as promised. Over on the entrees page, the rainbow trout looked great ... and it turned out to be perfectly prepared ... and huge! I had a bowl of chili, which was hearty and warm and tasty, and the mac and cheese was equally hearty, warm and tasty ... and decadent. Buttermilk french fries were especially unusual--and quite the hit all around the table. Interestingly, after all the hype only one of us had the hamburger--which deserved every bit of the local raving. (It's just that with this amazing menu how can you order just a hamburger?) I'm glad that *someone* had the burger, but I'm also glad that I we sampled from all the other places on this menu.

This is a pleasant and relaxing place. With great service and a wonderful menu. If you're staying at the Hyatt, Austin's is a pleasant walk right across the street. It deserves the high recommendations that it gets around town.

Hints? Let's see.

Don't accidentally go to the smoke-filled bar next door and think it's Austin's. It's not.

Do ask your wait staff for suggestions. She steered us right for every person at the table.

Go for a walk afterwards. This is a pretty area smack in the middle of a pine forest, and it's a walking-friendly town.

Hope this helps!

Had lunch there and they were short on help, but we didn't have to wait long. I had the Doug's salad and could have gone back and had it for dinner again. My husband had the chicken fried steak and he said it was good. As other's had posted about how good the cornbread was, well they were right, it's good. Prices are reasonable. The place sits about 49 inside.
