I had my first taste of sushi in the late 1970's at the original Osaka on West Sahara in Las Vegas. I had no benchmark at the time to realize how authentic was Osaka. Several decades later and with 18 years of living in Japan under my belt, I am pretty schooled at knowing good sushi from bad.

On a recent trip back to the States I had an opportunity to dine at the Osaka Bistro in Green Valley (Henderson), owned and run by the Nakanishi family, which has now been in the Japanese restaurant business for 40 years.

If anything, Osaka's large and vibrant Green Valley branch is better than the original. The sushi and rice are as good as just about any place you'd find in Japan. Service is efficient ialthough not effusive and for the non-traditionalists there are a large variety of rolls and long menu of cooked fish and other items. They ran out of uni (sea urchin) while we were there and the chefs contended toro (best belly-cut of tuna) was "out of season" but with so many items on the menu no one should leave this place hungry or unsatisfied.

The ultimate critic, my 9-year-old son, born and raised in Japan and a serious sushi connoisseur, also gave it the thumbs up.
We both agreed that the sushi here is just as good as that in the very pricey Sushi Roku in Caesar's Forum Shops. It is far superior to the sushi at other Green Valley upstarts and about the same price. Osaka Bistro is excellent value for money.

For tourists tempted to sample the hip and sexy new sushi bars opening along the Strip if sushi rather than sizzle is the prime objective a drive out to Osaka in Green Valley will be well worth it.
Nearly all the clientele, as best I could tell, were locals when we visited and on some nights there are even live jazz performances in the bar.

Congratulations to the Nakanishi family for staying in business. When I first tasted their sushi in the late 1970's they were the only Japanese restaurant in the Las Vegas valley. Now there are probably more than 50. I've still not found one that bests Osaka. Their awards from local and Japanese media confirm that.
