“Still the Best in Ely, NV”
Reviewed March 19, 2014

After trying several different motels/hotels in Ely we found that the new La Quinta Inn & Suites is the best. It is clean with no smoking; we have never experienced problems that were not addressed. Most of the older motels in Ely have that musty odor or the smell of cigarettes. There are no slot machines so it children friendly. It is located next to Ridley’s grocery store, which makes it convenient for picking up miscellaneous needs or boxed lunches for a picnic at Cave Lake State Park or a drive around Success Loop or a trip to Great Basin National Park. The La Quinta has a nice first floor dining area in the main building were they serve a hot breakfast every morning. If you just want to relax at the facility, there is a nice patio area outside the breakfast area and the breakfast area is usually available all day.
One problem is that they do not provide an “on screen” program and channel listing. It is hard enough to find channels when the in-room “hard copy” guide is not up to date. They provide a nice flat screen TV, however no HDTV stations. Since during this visit, it was cold and snowing we had to spend too much time in our room; a good TV and program guide would have helped. Ely has not daily newspaper for a TV program listing. The network channels are all Salt Lake City stations.

Room Tip: The 3rd floor rooms on the north side of the buildings have some nice views of the Schell Creek Moun...

This property is fairly new. It is a really attractive hotel. We were here for four night, as we were doing a photo shoot at the Nevada Northern Railway Steam Up during Feb. Rooms were comfortable and very large. The person working the front desk always ask us, if we wanted any cookies. Who is going to turn down cookies!!!! He kept asking if there was anything that we needed. He is a photographer too. We talked about camera's and photography. We had an excellent stay at this hotel.

We stopped in Ely for a Sunday evening. As one might expect Ely is pretty quiet on a Sunday night. Most of the casinos had empty parking lots and a good number of popular restaurants were closed.

We decided to drive US 50 from San Francisco to Denver after confirming no weather issues. The drive proved to be a lot nicer than I-80 to the north, but you have to plan your stops a little better and make sure you're in a reliable vehicle as it's earned its reputation as the loneliest highway in America for good reason.

The La Quinta appears to be a newer hotel/motel and seems kind of out of place in this town. The rooms are nicely appointed and the entire facility was very well maintained. The only downside is that the hotel is surrounded by a sea of concrete with very little landscaping. It's a rather a barren look in a barren environment rather than what could have been a little oasis. Most La Quinta's I've seen have very nice grounds as well.

It's a little expensive when compared to other available lodging in the area. We learned we could have saved some money by making an earlier reservation if only by a few days. We made a reservation on the Thursday before our stop and that resulted in higher costs than when I looked at it the weekend before. All in all its a nice hotel but I'm not convinced its worth what they were charging for the off time in a gambling oriented destination.

Room Tip: Make reservations early to get best pricing.

One would think remote Ely Nevada wouldn't have much to offer, but after a stay at the La Quinta Inn and receiving excellent service with a BONUS history lesson from Eric Lawrence the nighttime front desk attendant, it became one of the most surprising cities on my trip and a city I wouldn't mind passing through again. We happened into this gem via TA reviews and were not disappointed! Luckily there was space available, as it looked like the cleanest hotel in the city and the parking lot was full. It's located on Great Basin Hwy, next door to a supermarket and a gas station. The milk and cookies in the lobby were an added bonus. FREE WiFi, my only connection to the outside world (this almost seems impossible in such a remote town where cell phone coverage is questionable- I had none). Perfect for googling Ely NV looking up some of the amazing stories Mr. Lawrence shared. Complimentary breakfast, variety of choices (waffles, hot breakfast, yogurt). Our room was quiet, very clean, comfy beds, clean smelling linens & towels, working AC, microwave, coffee pot and mini fridge.
When we asked Eric Lawrence for restaurants recommendations, he quickly gave us a map and gave us several selections including one of his favorites the Cell Block Steak House (Delicious food). He was enthusiastic about sharing information about Ely, it's history and gave some excellent recommendations on attractions in Ely and the surrounding area. My assumptions of the tiny town quickly changed and I was disappointed I didn't have more time to spend in Ely checking out some of the places he suggested. There are several restaurants to chose from all with in 2 miles or less on the Ely Strip, an Arby's & McDonald's next door. My best advice is get gas before you leave Ely, outside of town there aren't any services for over 200+ miles. This hotel is approximately one hour from the Great Basin National Park & Lehman Caves (a must see). My overall experience with this hotel was excellent everything from the price, the value, cleanliness of the room, the hotel's location and front desk staff. Not one complaint! If I'm ever in Ely again, I'll definitely be staying here.

No surprises. Great location, beds are good, rooms are clean and fresh smelling. Excellent breakast spread with lots to choose from, it's much more than a cold breakfast roll and a glass of Tang. The check in quick and the staff very friendly.

It is a newer hotel so it is in good shape. Next door to a supermarket if you need anything. The only reason for the down grade was booked online for a king room and once I arrived told that it was a computer glitch and they could not honor rate it would be higher.
