I can't believe I actually waited in line for this meal!! If this is the #1 restaurant in Elko, then I weep for the place. Although I will give them credit for the the main course, the rest of the meal was little more than canned veggies and Wonderbread.
The service was perfunctory at best, the prices excessive.
If traveling east, aim for Boise; If headed west, hold out for Gardnerville; then you'll have a chance for a real Basque meal.

I have been eating at the Star since 1968, and have traveled all over the U.S and the rest of the world comparing Filets, none better. Add in the atmosphere and Scott, the owner, and his staff and you'll not have a better experience for dinner anywhere. If you've not experienced dinner in a Basque dinner house, you haven't lived, 7 courses before you get to the biggest and best steak of your life. And you might get to sit next to a real Nevada cowboy who's just in from the range and share stories, unforgettable. If you're new to Nevada and Basque dining don't miss the opportunity to have a Picon Punch at the bar, which has nothing to do with pecans. And stop at 3. Have fun, dinner at the Star is an experience that won't be duplicated anywhere.

Eating here is a "religious" experience. The food is out of this world. We had the baked lamb and the petite sirloin. Very Nevada decor, not fancy but clean and comfy. You eat family style. SO MUCH FOOD! We had to get 2 boxes to take it back to the hotel. 3 courses: a big bowl of Homemade veggie soup with lots of cabbage, celery and tomato. Another big bowl of serve yourself Lettuce salad with a homemade mayo garlic dressing. Then the baked lamb with mint and roasted peppers, steak, bread and butter, and bowls of: chick peas, red sheepherder beans, green beans with garlic, pasta with bolognese sauce, & home made french fries. Dessert looked good but we were stuffed. Large drinks. Good parking. They are busy, lots of locals and some tourists. Very friendly. Worth traveling a while to eat there.

Hands down this is one of the best restaurants in Northern Nevada not only for the food but the experience.

Rich in history the small hotel, bar, restaurant is inviting and fun as you experience the Basque style of dining. And that style is a lot of food. At the dinner hour everything is served family style. 90% of the menu is beef (no complaints here) and you will find a few chicken and pork entrees. As you are seated you will be served a bowl of vegetable soup - mainly cabbage and celery and very tasty with home made bread. Next comes the salad and with your monster steak (and I mean big) you will be served french fries, green beans, red and white beans and spaghetti.

It is a lot of food but very good. The steak was cooked perfectly and the experience is fun. The staff is very friendly and love to share the history of the Star and the Basque sheep herders. Definitely a must stop!
