Hilton Garden Inn Elko

Reviewed December 11, 2005

In mid-November of 2005, I stayed at the Hilton Garden in with my husband and 10 year old daughter. This is a new Inn located at the Northeast end of Elko, yet close to plenty of restaurants and the casinos. The rooms were nice and comfortable. I was disappointed with 2 things however.
The first is something that surprised me. The computer in the business room for guests was vulnerable, because it didn't have the latest Windows Service pack 2 and the Anti-Virus protection program had expired! Very outdated protection.
I brought this to the attention of the front desk and they said that it would be updated by someone, so hopefully this has been taken care of by now.

The second, is that the morning buffet is NOT complimentary for everyone who stays there. This was a big surprise to our family. We sat down after putting the usual continental breakfast fare on our plates and read a sign that seemed to indicate there was a cost not only to visitors, but to paying guests.
Fortunately, I saw a sign at the front desk that stated if you are a Gold Member or Hhonors Club Member, you get vouchers that allow you to eat for free. so, I got my tickets and gave them to the attendant at the end of our meal.
That seems really tacky to me and I don't know if that is common practice in most Hilton Garden Inns. Other than that, it is a nice facility.

I was pleasantly surprised by the amenities at this hotel. It was super clean & had a free gym, pool, hot tub, lounge area, microwave, etc. There was also pay washers and dryers on the first floor. The location is great for people taking road trips - it's right off of I-80. The express check out was a snap too.

We were in Elko for a wedding and I found the Hilton Garden Inn on Yahoo for $59 per night (less than several more inferior properties). Since we weren't in town to hunt/fish/gamble/drink, we were thrilled that the property didn't have a slot machine in sight!!! Our room was comfortable and quite large with a microwave and fridge (2 queens). The hotel sits at the top of the hill, away from the bustle of the casino properties, and offers a sweeping vista of the valley. There's a small gym, an indoor pool and outdoor sun deck. We ate once at the restaurant - 3 of us had full cooked to order breakfasts for $20!

If you're looking for a casino hotel, this isn't the place. But it was perfect for our trip!

The Hilton Garden Inn is located on a hill on the East Side of Elko right off a frontage road of Interstate 80. The architecture is straight out of the Hilton Garden Inn advertisements, and looks the same in Des Moines as it does in Toronto. The 3-story building was erected in 2001. Complimentary self parking is available. Complimentary airport shuttle.

The entry is very open and with light color marble flooring with a seating area with a fireplace and an efficient front desk directly behind. The staff is friendly, but definitely on the younger side. They are lacking that fine polishing required to really excel, but were friendly enough. Being a new facility, everything is clean and in tip top shape. Corridors were clean and bright.

Guest rooms on the West side of the building look out across the City of Elko, and hills and mountains directly behind the city. These are preferable. Most of the rooms on the East side of the building face either a retaining wall or the car dealership on top of the wall, these of course, I find less preferable. Immediately upon walking into the Room’s Foyer, you encounter what Hilton Garden Inn calls the “Hospitality Center” which houses a refrigerator, coffeemaker and microwave, right next to the small closet, where the iron and board are hidden. Furnishings and décor are the standard Hilton Garden Inn prototype with clean comfortable beds with floral comforters. The doubles here are full-size beds. This is a huge negative to me. My wife and I are not comfortable together on a double and we have to split up with the kids to pull off full size beds. But, oh well! Air Conditioning works well and furnishings are solid and very clean. The bathrooms are standard size, but the floors are nice limestone tile and the vanities are granite with good lighting. Complimentary bath care products are from the Neutrogena line, as with all Hilton branded hotels. Great for my sensitive skin.

On site dining is limited to the Americana Grill, which is a simple, cooked to order restaurant. Breakfast was fair, my wife and I had omelets. But the Kids had the pay Continental Breakfast, which was sub-standard during our stay. You can also get room service in the evenings. There is decent amount of restaurants within 10 minutes drive. But heck, this is Elko, everywhere in town is within 10 minutes drive. There is no gaming at the hotel, but the Red Lion Casino is only ½ mile down the road, and Downtown Elko is approx. 4 miles away.

One of the best features of the Hilton Garden Inn is their Indoor Pool. It was a very nice and clean facility with plentiful towels. There is a fitness center directly attached.

In summary, the Hilton Garden Inn is a clean, sufficient lodging experience, providing the nicest accommodations in town at typically reasonable prices. But for the most part, the Red Lion Hotel is their only competition.
