We normally stop in Winnemucca when we drive through to Vegas, but this time we decided to wait for a gas fill-up and went on to Battle Mountain…well there's not much in Battle Mountain…mostly empty “main street” then turned the corner and there it was, the Nevada Hotel, and inside the Owl club…a locals’ favorite we had heard about. There is a casino – Nevada right? The restaurant is a café, with a faux-stone countertop, and 8 booths along the windows, which made the place quite bright and airy; 12 seat food counter around the display kitchen plus separate Miners Room with 12 tables. Well I ordered a “Classic” skillet breakfast – it was a bit disappointing – overcooked eggs with little bits of bacon and melted cheese served on a bed of too-many cubed potatoes –and no gluten free bread or buns; Terry had the BLT…had to mess up but mayo was a bit sweet-tasting…and the skinny fries were great -- big portions – Waitress gave good service, waited to bring everyone’s food together.. polite, friendly, and efficient -- overall the food was pretty good and for a rural way stop, worth the visit.

Stopped for lunch while driving through Nevada. Trip Advisor reviews saved the day again.

Battle Mountain is a small town and the locals know where to get good comfort food, here at the Owl Club Casino Family Restaurant. Yes, you have to walk fifteen feet from the front door of the casino to the door of the restaurant and if you sit in a booth there, you’ll be able to smell smoke, but we couldn’t while we were seated about seven booths in. Michelle did a fabulous job of serving our table and Tommie also gets a gold star for an assist. It has a down-home diner atmosphere and while you’re waiting for your order, they have several joke books and a funny trivia newsletter on the table to make you laugh. (They’re also available for sale at the register).

The food was out of this world. The Ragin’ Cajun burger was at least four inches tall with a skewer stabbed through the center to hold it together long enough for Hubby to get his hands around it. And after his first bite, with the cheese melted into the meat and sausage, he said it was one of the best burgers he’s had and they’d gotten the Cajun flavoring just right. The Battle Mountain burger was also delicious and almost too big to hold. It’s a burger with ham and swiss added and so juicy, I had to wear a napkin as a bib. The garlic fries were excellent, tater tots perfectly crisp and not a bit greasy - and the handmade potato chips were the best we’ve ever had anywhere.

If you’re traveling this way, stopping here for a meal should definitely be on the list of things to do!

We had travelled from Carson City and decided to stop in Battle Mountain. We had difficulty finding somewhere to eat but took a chance at Owl Club. All day breakfast was still being served mid afternoon - the service was good, the food was hot and none of us were disappointed with the end result
