“Winter ski and Santa visit in Lapland”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

This hostel was voted best in Finland in 2012 and it keeps being a heaven. Owners' Family are super friendly and lots of activities for free in this farm. Many tourists stay here as hotels in Rovaniemi can be full very often (mainly because of Santa Village tourist crowds). We even did snow mobile in this property. Pick up and drop from Bus stop on main road is also available as well as Kitchen and Laundry. 5 starts Hostel !

Room Tip: If available get a own detached house with own sauna and kitchen.

I cannot say enough about what a wonderful stay we had at Visatupa. Everything about it was absolutely what we wanted: a quiet retreat in beautiful surroundings that avoided the tourist-heavy holiday resorts.

Bus running to Sodankyla and Ivalo stop in Raudanjoki and are fairly frequent from Rovaniemi; once there, cross the street to the convenience store, where Janne can come pick you up. It's walkable in theory to the hostel (about 4 km), but I wouldn't recommend it in winter or with larger bags.

Rooms were very cozy: wood furniture, large tables, and nice details like plenty of plugs and reading lamps. Bathrooms and showers were amazing, large and immaculately clean. Lots of common space with books and games, and a serviceable (though limited) self-cater kitchen. The breakfast and dinner prepared by the family were great...nothing kitschy (no reindeer barbecue), but simple, delicious, and very fresh, using ingredients straight from the farm. Note that dinner is eaten at around 3-3:30 in the winter, so I recommend bringing a few staples for simple meals and snacks later in the day.

In terms of activities, Janne is very accommodating: they have sleds, skis, and can assist with arranging other activities, although we contented ourselves with long winter walks. Absolutely recommend asking about the sauna...truly the best of many sauna experiences we had in Finland!

In sum, probably not as convenient for those looking for activity-packed days than staying in Saariselka or Ivalo, but for those looking to relax, unwind, and enjoy the outdoors, this is an ideal spot.
