It's only 15 minutes north of the interstate and the greatest view you will have for hundreds of miles. stop. rest. breathe. You won't be disappointed.

It's true - Lake McConaughy is in the middle of nowhere. But for my husband and I living in Omaha, NE and our friends living in Denver it makes a darn good meeting spot. Because the lake water is filtered by the sandy soil, the water looks like it just came out of the faucet. When we were there the lake was at about 70-75% capacity which was perfect because it meant all the sandy beaches were accessible. We were able to pull our jet boat right up onto the beaches, hop out with the dogs and swim a little, and be back on the water in no time. At several of the businesses on the water, you can pay $15-20 to have them back your watercraft down into the water with a tractor. I'd encourage people to pay the money for the service because if you're truck gets stuck in the sand and water, it's gonna cost ya and could damage your equipment. We stayed in a crummy trailer at North Shore Lodge and had a blast - Lake McConaughy is not about being fancy, it's about having fun.

I sat with my dog by what they labeled as the "beach" and it felt like I really was at the beach. It was very peaceful and relaxing to just sit there for a bit. The rest of it is beautiful and worth seeing.

A big lake in a dry area......long drive over the dam is nice. White sand beaches to visit if you choose...fee involved however

Lake McConaughy is a beautiful oasis emerging from rolling corn and wheat fields. Nevertheless, once you get off the road and try to approach the water, scorching sand far from public parking areas and seagull droppings start to complicate matters. Additionally, don't try to drive a low-lying car in the sand. My recommendation: do what the other car did and just take pictures from the car. The contrast in the landscape is interesting and sometimes even breathtaking.
