If you are anywhere near Nebraska City, Nebraska, The Lied Center is the place to stay. The facility is built in the grand lodge style with the Arbor Day Foundation influence throughout. The views are spectacular; the staff is great; the food is delicious, and the rooms are well appointed and comfortable. There are many amenities, including an indoor pool and exercise room, beautiful grounds and hiking trails. At certain times they also offer horse drrawn carriage rides. I can't say enough good things about this place....and they aren't paying me a cent to do it! Give them a try. I believe you will have a wonderful experience.

The Arbor Lodge is a wonderful surprise in the eastern edge of Nebraska. Since my husband's family is from the midwest, this was a terrific place to gather for a reunion in 2001. We returned in March 2002 for another visit. The timber architecture and soaring ceilings in the lobby and dining room are exhilarating and soothing. (Be sure to sit by the fire on either side of in the spectacular floor-to-ceiling limestone fireplace in the lobby sitting area.) All the rooms have a second "timber" entry; some folks thought these were a hazard, given their proximity to the (tiny) bathroom. There's no spa, but there's a marvelous heated indoor pool and clean, spacious Jacuzzi at ground level. The food was consistently good -- rather remarkable in this underpopulated part of the midwest, where "salad" usually means Jell-O. There's a small but decent wine list and a full bar (oddly, seldom populated when we visited). If you're hungry, be sure to get to the dining room before 8 p.m.; on weeknights, it often closes that early. Another extraordinary feature of the property are the paths through cultivated woodland -- makes the place feel more like east Texas than Nebraska. The property is adjacent to the Arbor Day Center and at least two parks, so there's plenty of opportunity to get out in the fresh air.
