“unbelievably beautiful”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

This place surpassed all our expectations. The house and the location are so beautiful and tranquil, and our hostess Linda was so welcoming. But if you can't live without TV and the internet this is not for you, but if you can appreciate peace and quiet in an idyllic location you cannot do better- (there is even a superb restaurant next door)

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed the "quiet" of our historical Farmhouse Inn. The fireflies are putting on great performances now and the sunsets are marvelous but even the applause is quiet.

This was our second time to visit the Kearney, NE area during the March crane migration season. We decided to try Burchell's because it was so highly rated and in the hopes we would meet other passionate crane watchers. The ratings don't do justice to our experience. Bob and Linda have created a wonderful bed and breakfast in the middle of the corn fields, complete with an amazing restaurant. In addition our hopes of meeting other birders were realized as a couple of National Park staff were staying at the inn as well.

Bob and Linda are a delightful couple who are there when you need or want them while allowing you a great deal of privacy. Coffee provided outside our bedroom each morning, breakfast was delicious and suggestions on where to see birds were plentiful. The restaurant will have you coming back for lunch and dinner as Bob smokes meats in a mouth-watering way. The desserts are homemade and delectable. We tried something different each time and were never disappointed.

A special treat is the menagerie of adopted animals at the farm. Buster, a very sweet and tolerant dog, eight cats who swarm Buster and four ducks who make the pond adjacent to the house their home. The animals all wait eagerly for Bob in the morning and eat as a group with the ducks literally running in a perfectly straight line to breakfast.

We will definitely find a reason to go back to this wonderful spot near Minden.

Thank you for the great pictures and kind words. We enjoy our guests who come to watch the spring crane migration. They travel to Central Nebraska in March...not exactly a well known vacation spot or season. The sandhill cranes put on a great show, the local attractions are interesting and worthwhile, our employees are hardworking and friendly, we strive to exceed expectations, and even Buster knows his job. Thanks for taking the time to write such a wonderful review.

I was at the Inn with my sister in March 2012. We came to Nebraska for the sandhill crane migration. The Inn offered a wonderful mid-week discount package for sandhill crane watchers and I'm so glad we stayed with them. It's a real farmhouse in the country with all the charm of the old and the comfort of the new. We stayed in the Bette Queen Room. It was clean, quiet, with its own entrance, with a nice attached private bathroom. Our beds were very comfortable, and the decor of the entire house is charming. Bob and Linda were the perfect innkeepers; friendly, but not intrusive, available and had great advice about places to view the cranes and have lunch. They made wonderful breakfasts each morning with ample portions and very good coffee. We ate dinner in their restaurant both nights and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The farm is lovely to walk around. I will be back.

We found the inn when trying to find a place to eat in Minden. It is off the main path with no signs so it was just luck that we thought to Google for a place to eat and the listing came up. We had a wonderful family meal and visit with the owners. Service was excellent and the home cooked meal was delicious. It's the best place to eat in Minden.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed dinner. As we recall, your family had been traveling for almost a month and your son reported dinner at the Farmhouse Inn was the best meal since leaving home. Your positive comments will be shared with our staff. Traveling a short distance from the "beaten path" enriched your family's visit to Central Nebraska. Safe travels home.

Unlike the other reviews, our experience at Burchell's was disappointing. Our room was unbearably hot yet Mrs Burchell asked us not to open the door to the balcony exit because we'd let flies in. Sure enough, we found dead flies on the floor around the beds. They advertise free wireless internet, however they do not keep the router plugged in because they are billed by usage and they try to keep their costs down! They will allow you to plug it in if you ask, which we found out the next morning as we were leaving. Our breakfast was disappointing. We were told to be there at a specific time - no choice was offered - which was later than we preferred. We showed up on time, only to discover that breakfast hadn't been started. We were invited to sit down 30 minutes later with other guests. A nice, fruit salad was passed around the table, eaten, and then we waited for whatever was coming next. Eventually French toast was served - made from thin-sliced, store-bought bread, nothing special, with syrup served straight from the bottles. After we had eaten the French toast, the bacon was served. Mrs Burchell's explanation and apology was that "you never know how long it's going to take to cook bacon." At the conclusion of breakfast, we were presented with our bill for the night. Be sure to get your confirmation date and prices IN WRITING when you book, because ours were incorrect. We did not book a package deal, but Mrs Burchell "upgraded" us to the package deal which was more expensive and included items we did not need. She then deducted the extra charges, saying she gave us a deal! Her "deal" was more expensive than our original quote but since her confirmation email was vague, we had no leg to stand on. As for dinner in the restaurant, be aware that each patron cannot choose his/her own menu item. You get one choice of main course for every two people. Portions are substantial but the food was average. (We had ribs, almond green beans and cheesy potatoes.) While others rave about the friendliness of Bob, he apologized to us in the parking lot as we were leaving that he didn't have time to visit with us. Linda seemed, to us, adversarial from the start rather than welcoming. At no time did we experience a comfortable, homey feel. I'm not sure why our experience was so different from others who have stayed here, perhaps we caught them at a bad time. We travel a fair amount and typically have great travel stories - but we would never stay at this B&B again. The rest of our crane migration experience was delightful and far exceeded expectations.

Room Tip: We ended up opening the door to our room despite the flies and it cooled down enough to get a good n...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your visit. We are sorry that you stay was disappointing. Your reservation was for March 7 and 8 and you requested no blind tickets. This was confirmed in an e-mail dated February 28, 2012. You arrived on the March 8 instead of the 7th. After eight e-mails, numerous phone calls and web site description, it is unfortunate that there was any vagueness about specifics such as date, price or packaged elements.

I am sorry your room was too warm for you when you arrived. Temperatures in the 70’s are not common in Nebraska during early March. I try to check rooms for temperature an hour or so before guests are expected. Quite frankly I had considered you a “no show” since you hadn’t shown up for the first day of your confirmed reservation. I advise guests to open the screened windows instead of opening unscreened doors to keep insects outside. Breakfast is usually served at 8:30 am but we are flexible. During crane season, breakfast is served whenever our crane watchers return from the blinds. Usually breakfast goes very smoothly and is very relaxing. When I have guests who have dietary issues, I try to serve items like syrup in original containers so they can check labels.

We share your frustration with the wireless internet service. It is sometimes slow and unpredictable. Our rural options for commercial service are limited. We do not charge guests for using the internet and do encourage guests to plug into the internet directly if they are experiencing problems. We have clarified the situation for guests on our web site.

Some of your comments merit a re-evaluation of our practice. We are always interested in improving our service to guests.

We just returned from a trip to Nebraska to see the crane migration. We spent three nights at the farmhouse and found it to be the perfect choice. Bob and Linda do their utmost to make you feel welcome. The rooms are all very comfortable, most with their own entrances. Linda's breakfasts and Bob's smoked meat dinners were all delicious. Most of all we loved the location of the inn. It's in the middle of Nebraska's wide open farm fields. The sunsets were incredible.
Linda grew up at the farm and is happy to provide information on attractions in the area. This place gave us fond memories of a beautiful place!

My husband and I spent one night in the Bobby Joe Room. We were on vacation and traveling to Colorado. Our room was very nice and comfortable. We ate dinner at the restaurant and it was very good. The breakfast at the Farmhouse was good too. Bob and Linda were very nice.
