The Turret
Ranked #2 of 2 Lake Hayes B&B and Inns
Reviewed January 10, 2013

we stayed in this b&b for two nights and fiona upgraded us to the turret room, which is actually two rooms and a fantastic bathroom. the view over the garden and lake is wonderful. fiona was very helpful and friendly and cooked us a great breakfast with many different choices to fuel up for a long day. we even met her dog, smeagols, a truly lovable chap. (note to people who do not like dogs: smeagols is not allowed in the guest rooms, we wanted to meet him.) the turret room has a very comfy bed and a neat sitting room as well as a cute balcony. we loved our stay at the turret, thank you fiona.

The Turret is one of the most beautiful B&Bs we have ever stayed in and is right across from the beautiful Lake Hayes. We stayed in the larger, 2 room, Turret room and it has the most amazing view from the living room; even the bathroom was palatial! (Check our pictures)

Fiona & Tim made our stay the most comfortable and went out of their way helping us with information on public transport, stuff to do, etc. The morning breakfast is lovely and Fiona made us eggs the way we wanted...hot & welcoming. We especially loved one breakfast table which has an awesome view of the lake. There's free wifi, though connectivity could be an issue in some parts of the house.

The Turret is around 7-10 minutes away from Frankton, a major bus station of Queenstown. There are yellow connectabuses that run between Frankton to Camp Street (city centre); so, once you get to Frankton, you are fine. To get to Frankton, use the yellow buses that run between Arrowtown and Frankton and back. While going to Frankton, the closest stop from The Turret (Amisfield Winery) is around 7-10 mins walk; while returning, the stop (Lake Hayes Pavilion) is just on the opposite side.

All in all, if a beautiful English Manor cottage opposite a beautiful lake on the outskirts of the busy Queenstown is your thing, The Turret is The place for you.

Many Thanks to Fiona & Tim for an unforgettable stay!

Room Tip: We strongly recommend the 2 room Turret room on the 1st floor; the view from that living room was su...

Fabulous, stayed 3 nights and was upgraded to the suite which is absolutely lovely. Good location only 15 min from Queenstown, great and plentiful breakfast and views of the garden and lake. Fantastic host and would stay again.

Words aren't adequate to describe the Turret. It's basically an elegant English Country Manor overlooking Lake Hayne. We stayed in the Turret Room. You MUST stay at this inn. This is the first place in NZ where we actually bought a bottle of wine (from the winery down the street, Amisfield) and simply watched the view of Lake Hayne and bunnies (3 adults and 1 baby) scampering across the expanse of lush green lawn. The entire Inn is clean beyond belief. The location is just a few miles from Arrowtown (an old mining town "not to be missed). Though the Inn is off the road, you can hear the road, so bring earplugs but don't let this detour you as this Inn is really amazing. We ate dinner at the Postmasters House in Arrowtown and the food was terrific.

Room Tip: I highly recommend the upper floor turret room as it has an adjacent living room with amazing views...

We stayed here late september. The only thing to say about this place was that it was just lovely. The turret room was beautiful and the views were were just stuning and we had a beautiful bath. Breakfast was standard fare with possibly one of the most beautifull veiws from the table for 2 next to the window, the bed was comfortable (we dont like really hard beds or really soft beds). There was a guest lounge room with an open fire where we met some lovely guests.

When we stayed in queenstown proper where we had to catch a taxi if going out for a drink and you will have to do the same here unless you have a car, so stay here.

Things to do in this area, your are sort of halfway between queenstown and Arrowtown. First off if its a beautifull day a walk around th front of the lake is lovely, if keen can walk the whole lake. The lake itself is stunning. For lunch walk upto the Amisfield Winery for a lovely lunch and a wine chosen for each meal via the menu if you wish. Service, food and wine are all lovely and its a beautiful place. Bit more expensive but you are on holiday.

If just wanting a cup of tea or coffee try the Walnut Cottage Cafe (driving distance) on the way to Arrowtown on your left, again a lovely place. They also serve meals. They also have a lovely place just to sit in the garden.

Arrowtown has plenty of places to eat and drink and explore, we went and had a look at the graveyard which was interesting, also at the same spot is the towns war memorial to the fallen, its in a beautiful spot.

On the way back from Queenstown try the road from Queenstown to Arrowtown and pop up to the ski field just out of town on your left, the view was lovely. The day we did was the end of the ski season and there was not a tourist around, apart from some staff leaving we were by ourselves.

Do yourself a favour and stay here.

Room Tip: The Turret room is the place for me, but othe guest liked their rooms as well

The Turret offers the perfect combination of great people and comfortable rooms, all in an unforgettable setting. I felt the stress melt away as I sat on the patio and took in the tremendous views of Lake Hayes and beautiful gardens. Kim (the owner) is one of the friendliest people I have met while traveling in New Zealand. She was very attentive and went out of her way to make me feel at home. The America's Cup room where I stayed was clean and spacious. It was hard for me to leave! I highly recommend the Turret to anyone traveling to the Queenstown area. I know that I am coming back!

We arrived late and we called kim. She is such a kind person. She was waiting for us and also offered help with our two big luggages. Although we can handle them, but the offer is really warm. The upgraded room is so nice/comfortable and great view of the lake. You can feel the taste from the decoration, the furniture, and the music. Kim gave us many suggestions for activities we are interested. It is a great place to stay. I will definitely recommend it.
