The Historic Argo Hotel
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Crofton
Reviewed May 28, 2013

We spent Monday, May 20th, at the historic Argo hotel and we hope that we'll get another opportunity. The hotel has been charmingly redecorated and contains many period nuances. We had a suite, which is simply two of the originally small rooms combined into a bedroom and sitting area, a lovely and quite large bathroom, and a balcony. Breakfast was delicious and we enjoyed chatting with the owner and her brother. The price was incredibly low....and the value was high for this relaxing visit to the Argo.

Room Tip: Ask for a suite....at this price, you can't go wrong!

We stayed at The Argo for 2 nights in August. There were three of us (my husband, son and me) and we stayed in the Marcella Suite. It had a private bath and two rooms, one with a double bed and one with a daybed. Perfect for our needs. The beds were pretty comfortable and the bathroom worked well. Breakfast in the morning was very good and they were very accommodating with my husband & son's gluten allergies, making them something different when they couldn't eat what was offered that day. We also had dinner at the steak house both nights. It was really good and the price was excellent. We had three steaks, with salad and choice of a side and the bill with tax was $52. The second night we had 1 steak, pork chops & salmon and the total was $40. Can't beat that. There is a very nice woman that plays the piano on Friday & Saturday nights. We really enjoyed that. Sandra is a great hostess and really interacts with the guests. The second night we were there she opened the speakeasy in the basement. What a cool place! We played a bunch of music on the jukebox and had a really great time. This place is a true gem: it is very unique and fun. We will visit again!

We were on the first leg of a 7000 mile driving trip and just ran out of steam. We were looking for non traditional lodging and found this gem. It's an old hotel, but well maintained and the owner very accommodating. The breakfast was not fancy, but adequate. We slept very well. Don't miss the old bar in the back.

This is a fun place to stay. We stayed in a suite and our friends stayed in a standard room. The standard room was just as nice as the suite and half the price. Breakfast was basic but fine. Take some time to look at the photos in the lobby. The bed was a bit dodgy but worked.

Room Tip: Don't pay for a suite

The rooms are named after movie stars in days gone bye. Service was outstanding, food was great! In the dining room a red hat lady played the piano better than grandma ever did!! Old time music played with flare .We sat after dinner on the balcony outside our room sipping cocktails, chatting with other guests, watching the sun retire. Sandra, the owner, can recount tales of days past. Comfortable, very comfy, bed!! And a six foot jaccuzi tub in our suite---let the hunters comb the countryside--while us non hunters relax in comfort and style in the Argo ! Loved our stay!

Room Tip: Tell Sandra what you like- she makes it happen!

I loved the decorations and the low lighted halls. I stayed in the Glen Kelly room with my friend and it was so quaint! The patio was nice and the doors out angled which made it interesting. Sandra was so nice and friendly, her breakfast was awesome, and she does such a good job running it. The only complaint I would have is the location is a bit out of the way but that is it.

My husband and I have stayed at the Argo a number of times. We've stayed in the Honeymoon Suite and a couple of the other rooms on the property. All the rooms we've stayed in have been clean and comfortable with private baths. Some of the rooms do have shared baths. There is a wonderful story to this historic building and the owners are happy to share it with you if you ask! They serve breakfast each morning and if you walk away hungry it is your own fault! They provide a full breakfast complete with eggs, sausage, bacon, fruits, breads, coffee, juice, milk. The breakfast is always hot and cooked to perfection! Definitely worth the price!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Historic Argo Hotel was built in 1912 to serve the railroad traffic of the time. It is located in the heart of Crofton, a small town in northeastern Nebraska on Hwy 12, also known as the Outlaw Trail. It is near Lewis and Clark Lake and Recreation Area on the Missouri River. The hotel has been restored back to its former grandeur. The exterior of this brick bed and breakfast is reminiscent of hotels of the early 1900s. Inside, transom windows over the doors, metal ceilings and a large oak staircase add to the periodic charm. Go back in time to the 1900's and imagine travelers coming into town by train from Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul who were then picked up by stagecoach or horse-drawn wagon to be taken to their final destination. Indulge yourself with a stay here and enjoy a taste of history. The Victorian-style rooms on the upper floor are decorated with antiques but have modern amenities. They feature free Wi-Fi, cable TV, air-conditioning and private bathrooms. All suites provide sitting areas, while most have Jacuzzi tubs and some offer full living rooms or balconies. Enjoy a delicious hot breakfast in the morning after a relaxing night's sleep. Doc's Bar and the Leslie Brooks Dining Room are open Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings with menu items including steak, chicken, seafood and pasta. ... more   less
