After braving the winding roads, we were pleased to discover the Hudson-Meng Site which is an awe inspiring ancient bison bone-bed. For a meager fee we were invited inside an active excavation site where a personalized tour, by an extremely friendly Forest Service Ranger, was provided. I had no idea that there were 8 foot tall bison roaming around Nebraska only a few thousand years ago, and the demonstrations of an ancient hunting weapon (an atlatl) is definitely worth the drive! There are fully functional restrooms with water fountains at the parking lot at the top of a scenic path down to the actual building. There is also additional handicap parking down by the building as well. I am sure to stop by next year to see what new mysteries have been uncovered!

Hudson-Meng, ("The Meng" according to the friendly staff) is a great resource for learning about how ancient peoples used to "hunt" bison by driving them off of cliffs. The "bone bed," as it is called, is a beautiful mosaic of death. Give yourself enough time to explore the backroads on the way to the site. There is some very good pie to be had at the DRIFT SHACK just down the road. There is more than corn in Nebraska! This really is the Old West!

"What's up Meng?" "Hudson Meng!"

Hudson-Meng requires driving on dusty roads, but is completely worth the effort. The bone beds are within a large, covered, and air-conditioned structure. The tour guides are simply the best. Read up on the site before you go, as the origins of the bones are still not completely known. Bottom line: good accompanying trip to Hot Springs, South Dakota's Mammoth Site.
