High Plains Homestead is way out in the middle of nowhere, a good many miles on unpaved roads. It is wonderful. There is an ramshackle old west boardwalk motif to the place with numerous outbuildings filled with interesting stuff. Cats, buffalo and chickens are about, the latter providing breakfast eggs.

Our room had a B&B feel to it with a quilt on the bed and plenty of nicknacks. We had a shower, no tub. A big, cooked breakfast was included, the steak dinner was reasonably priced. We were real glad we stayed there.

The owners/staff were helpful and friendly. Fellow guests were rock hounds. An internet search will turn up High Plains Homestead's accurate webpage. We also visited Toadstool Geologic Park, Ft. Robinson, and the Museum of the Fur Trade in that corner of Nebraska.

Most folks who live in the Front Range of Colorado don't often think of vacationing in Nebraska. But they should. Good, interesting mountain biking, excellent fossil and rock hunting, star gazing, theater, history...and perhaps most striking, a genuine impression of being somewhere 'different.' Sure, everybody speaks english, but when you are sitting on a quiet porch, as the sun sets and the emptiness of the prairies blends into the emptiness of the night sky...well it it's truly someplace special.
High Plains Homestead is a great place to experience all this. It's on a good dirt road, passable by 2WD. Each cabin individually themed, and all comfortable. Breakfast is plentiful and they were very gracious in adapting to our vegetarian kids. Serve a good dinner from what I hear, although it was easier for us to eat in town after each day's activities. The homestead includes a series of outbuildings housing a collection of museum quality objects from the past, which is fun to explore (although it cries out for some curating- I'd love to know more about some of the items...)
The owners are genuine local experts, happy to share their knowledge. They sent us to a great local rock-hounding spot, I wish we had taken more advantage of their advice from the start.
One tip though- the water is highly mineralized. It's fine for bathing, etc, but a little weird to drink. Do yourself a favor and buy some bottled water to throw into the room's fridge.
