If you like generic hotels, you may not care for the Bassett Lodge, but you will be missing experiencing a class hotel of the good old days. We have stayed at the lodge 3 different times over the last several years, and I can say that it continues to get better and better. Since it is an old hotel, and retains the "flavor" of such, the rooms are small, but perfectly comfortable. The current owner has upgraded the rooms and beds, but I was relieved that the lobby has not lost any of its old charm of yesteryear. There is a lovely small courtyard as well. The food at the Range café is not fancy, but rivals many much more expensive and top-of-the line restaurants. I strongly recommend this to anyone....unless you prefer the sanitized generic predictability of name-brand homogeneous hotels that is.....

My wife and I and my grandson stayed here a while back. We Stopped for the food, and enjoyed everything so much , that we stayed over for the night. We always try to find the classics, and we hit the jack pot here. Altough some of the rooms were being upgraded, we opted for an original. And they were. original as 1930's can get. Small, dark rooms, the beds were tiny. So if you are looking for todays place to stay- don't bother. But if you get a kick out of traveling like the old days, this is one of the bet examples in the midwest that we have found. The Lady running the place was perfect. Her attitude, and service was top notch. We loved it, and if we get back that way, we'll do it again. Thanks.

If you're a real adventurer, the Bassett Lodge will be just your style! The rooms are different than any modern ticky-tack hotel and the lobby is extremely comfortable. We found an amazing courtyard where we spent a lot of our time just hanging out and enjoying the beautiful weather. The Range Cafe was absolutely delicious, and their Sunday morning brunch was to die for! The owner was by far the sweetest, most accommodating hotelier that I've encountered (and I work in tourism). We will never forget our time at the Bassett Lodge!

Very interesting place. The history is cool. The rooms leave a little to be desired but it is well worth the stay. It is very reasonably priced.

"Grandma's place" is being updated! New carpets throughout, 15 of the 30 rooms have new queen size mattresses and now the mouth watering smell of home cooking from the adjoining cafe is in the air. Stay a night (or two!) at the historic Bassett Lodge and enjoy a meal at the Range Cafe, we think you will be pleased with both.

Great hotel in Bassett, this is a wonderful motel from the 40-50s timeframe. These days check into any cheesy hotel chains throughout the midwest and you will get the same Mc Donald's type one size fits all room. This place is something quite different. Mellow out see small town america at its best. Gayla P was great person who really made our stay comfortable. The lobby of the lodge takes you back to a timeless era of the 50s TV westerns. I half expected Roy Rogers to step out and say welcome to Bassett. We wanted to stay only overnight on our way to the Badlands and Black hills. But would tell anyone get a good book relax in the lobby have a couple of great meals at the adjoining cafe and just relax a bit. Don't know why they got 1 bad review out of 4. Maybe that person was just having a bad hair day. My wife and I live part of the time in Turkey and half of the year in Iowa. We has been to 5 stars places and 1 star places costing 20-200+ dollars a night, but we will always remember our wonderful stay in Bassett. By the way this place is cheaper and better than anything Valentine or Oneil has to offer. Did I mention all the people we met in Bassett were very friendly and helpful, Thanks to all. eric and suna

Yes,this Hotel is not fully restored to the original splendor yet, but the rooms are clean. The Hotel manager, Gayla, is very nice, helpful and accommodating. The hotel has lots of charm and history. The Lodge Cafe is just the best. Everything is home made. Must try the famous Chicken Fried Steak. The Sunday Brunch is great. Meet the head chef Rhonda and the gang and be prepared to over eat. We were lucky to participate in the Halloween Fun.
