Rocking Z Guest Ranch
Reviewed May 15, 2011

Absolutely wonderful stay,Patty, Zach and family all very freindly, helpful and entertaining. Location exceptionally beautiful and rides in mountains display awesome scenery. Rooms spacious, clean and furnished with gorgeous log furniture. Breakfast, lunch and dinner very good. The horses were excellent, well behaved but very willing and a pleasure to ride. Infact the only bad point was that i could only stay 4 nights. I will definately return, soon.

I travelled alone for 8 days at the Rocking Z Ranch in Montana, a trip I wanted to experience ever since being a child and Rocking Z Ranch did not dissapoint!
Patty & Zack were so friendly and welcoming that I felt at home straight away. I had the most comfortable room with enough hot water for 2 showers/baths a day and the room was warm and very quiet (you don't hear anything out in Montana!). The food was amazing! Patty does a great job in looking after you and catering to all your dietry needs, you can even help yourself to food and drink from the fridge anytime, so you'll never feel hungry and the food is fantastic, be careful of putting on a few pounds during the week as the food is so good and the most amazing pancakes with syrup and bacon/eggs for breakfast!

Even though I travelled alone as you eat most meals together (accept if you are out on a ride at lunchtime and they provide a picnic lunch for your group) so it's easy to make friends at the ranch and get to know everyone. I met some wonderful people and we spent a great week of riding together. So don't worry about travelling alone! as you'll come home with having some new friends :)

As for the riding and horses it was totally amazing, the scenery is breathtaking and no matter how many days you ride for each ride is completely different and catered towards your riding ability and needs. All the horses are wonderful and you can choose to have the same horse all week (you'll be matched to your horse once you arrive on the ranch) or change to a different horse if you want to. I was given Ginger, a great confidence booster for me! I was quite nervous apon arriving at the ranch having not ridden for a few years, but by the end of the week I was cow hearding, barrell racing and cantering bareback! It's great to learn about the Perilli horse whispering technique and this is one of the very few ranches that offer the training - very interesting I really recommend it. The riding is amazing, you can choose to go on a 'faster' ride (like Medicine Rock) or a more sedate ride, if you are a beginner you can be taken out alone if you would like to just have a go at sitting on a horse.

Maria & Anna are just absolutely amazing, they are the most wonderful girls and run the ranch amazingly well. They are always smiling, I don't know how they do it! Anything you need or any questions you have please don't worry about asking, as they are there to help and by the end of the week you'll be a super confident rider! If you are an advanced rider there's plenty of exciting rides and things to do, there's also shooting and fishing and roping available to learn too. The scenery at the ranch is just beautiful I had a view of the horses' field from my window.

Every morning the girls go and get the horses in which I recommend you bring your camera for! It's just wonderful to watch the horses galloping across the fields. There's also a few girls who work at the ranch with Anna & Maria who are just amazing, so friendly and helpful so don't feel bad if you ask for the million time to have your stirrups adjusted or ask if you don't want to canter on a ride or anything as they are all so helpfull The girls will even take you to the best photo areas (all of Montana is beautiful!).

There's also an option to go shopping in Helena (there's a great shop there to get your cowboy hat and boots!) and go to a Rodeo which I would encourage you not to miss! At night you can head down to the 'Saloon' bar at the Ranch, play pool, have a drink and plug in your i-pod and play some tunes! A great way to get to know everyone after a long day's riding!

There are long rides (5-6hrs with picnic lunch) and shorter rides (3-4hrs) available but they will cater for shorter rides if you request them or lessons. They have an outdoor arena and schooling area as well as special pens for the horse whispering. All the horses are beautiful and extermely well looked after and the tack is in pristine condition.

I would recommend flying into Helena Airport as the Ranch is only around a half hour away rather then Great Falls which is an hour away from the Ranch. Also make sure you take a good waterproof jacket with you as the weather (even in August) can be a little tempermental and a warm jumper/jacket for night time. It gets extremley cold at the rodeo so wrap up warm there! But Patty & Zack will provide you blankets for the rodeo if it gets too cold!

I cannot recommend Rocking Z highly enough and hope to go back one day. Also make sure you bring your camera you can take plenty of photos along the way and get the girls to take photos of you on your horse in the beautiful scenery.

A special thanks to Patty, Zack, Anna, Maria, Emma & Morgan who just made my trip so memorable. I've come back from Montana a more confident (cow girl!) as well as made many friends - I can't rate Rocking Z highly enough, it was a holiday of a lifetime.

This was our 3rd trip to the Rocking Z and as much as I would like to keep this piece of heaven all to myself, it is only right that it is shared with others - I cannot say enough positive things about the ranch and the Wirth family who ensure you have the best vacation ever. The ranch is in beautiful big sky country where one can ride for hours - all riders are catered for whether beginner or expert and there is so much variety on offer from Parelli classes to fast canters through open pasture. Accommodation is clean and comfortable with superb home cooked meals served family style. Once of the most enjoyable aspects of the vacation is socializing with the other guests around the dinner table and trading tales of our day. For non-horsey partners, the fly fishing in the area is outstanding and the trout in the Missouri river, huge! My husband always fishes with Montana Fishing Outfitters - ask for Garrett to be your guide! If you enjoy riding and don't want nose to tail then this is the place to come! Enjoy!

This trip with my 9year old Autistic son was just fantastic. The staff and owners could not have been more attentive to us both, great riding with fantastic willing but well behaved horses. We would certainly love to return.

If you want a beautiful, secluded location with a wonderful ranch family, horses, fishing and exploring, this is the place to go. The horse riding is great for both experts and beginners. Wake up in the morning to a great ranch breakfast, then hop in the pickup and round up the 50+ horses and herd them back to the corral. Have a variety of wonderful morning rides through the valley or over the hills before enjoying a relaxing afternoon at the ranch. Enjoy a walk, photography or fishing along the small meandering creek before enjoying a great intimate dinner with the ranch family and guests from around the world. Enjoy a look at the stars before retiring to a restful sleep in the quiet of a cool Montana night.

Been two years in a row now and had a brilliant holiday both times. The Ranch is a self contained delight , the horses are outstanding and the Wirth family ensure that any and every thing you might need or want is available ..if at all possible.

The rooms are very comfortable , cabin style , bathrooms very nice, with heating and cooling to a high standard . I found them perfect.

There is a great Club house with bar / pool table ... I took quite a taste to "Moose Drool" beer which tatses better than it sounds and sitting there beer in paw after riding all day as the sun sets on the Mountains around you is magical. The food is to my mind remarkable ... I loved every meal, which is all home cooked and the conversations between the other guests and the family are about as wide ranging and informative as you can get .. totally fascinating.

The horses are stars of the show. They are all in great shape and with well maintained tack make every ride a good one . The family have all the knowledge in the world to fit the right horse to the right rider ... Ginger is my girl .

You can have long rides , short rides , fast rides , slow rides ..whatever you want , just ask. It is your holiday and the feeling that the Wirths ( and Chris ) will move Heaven and Earth to ensure that you enjoy your time with them in Montana is what you will take home.

Shopping trips ( I recommend Murdocks for all things ), Ghost Town explorations , local bars, fishing ( a river actually does run through the ranch), Natural Horsemanship insights, Clay Pigeons, or just lounging in the sun are are all available.

Well , thats about it . Outstanding place and I will be there again this year .

My husband and I stayed at the Rocking Z for my birthday in June 2009. Horseback riding was abundant and the staff was friendly and fabulous. All the meals were made from scratch including my birthday cake. We met people from all over the world during our short one week stay. Don't forget to hang your horseshoe in the Saloon before you leave.
